Installed ARAP bin and WOW!!!

I just got my burner and chips today. I installed a zif on my Hypertech memcal and inserted the eprom I burned with the ARAP bin. I disconnected my cold start injector and started it up. It idled really nice and after closed loop kicked it in it idle even smoother (idled better than my 32 code ever did). Took it for a spin and I could not believe the difference. It drives like a totally different car and is very responsive. I agree and don't know why anyone with a 165-MAF car would running anything else.

I am going hook the scanner up to see how the BLMs are and also do a few runs to see what needs to be done to the spark tables.

I was really suprised how easily and fast I was able to have everything set up to burn my first chip.

Again WOW!

Thanks for the great information everyone.

This is good news. I like reading posts about succes stories with their cars.

I also switched to the ARAP bin, with many of the values from my 88 GM and ADS chips. I will be going back to more values from the ARAP. I just don't want to make too many changes without testing the car. I still have about a month before I will be driving it. Can't happen soon enough!!!!

I have an '88 Iroc. WHAT is this mythical "ARAP.bin" I keep hearing so much about?? Would it make a difference as compared to a stock '88 TPI chip?

Yes, there is a big difference. The ARAP is a 6E code used in 89 that eliminates the cold start injector through improved fuel management at startup.

The ARAP bin is what GM supplied in their test cars used in magazines. It optimizes maximum spark and fuel for performance. My 87 stock bin was very mild compared to the 89 ARAP. It was created with performance in mind while still being able to pass emissions. I do not think it would require your car to have modifications in order to run the ARAP bin but it will give you the best starting point when creating a custom prom.

It was a plug-n-play for my 87 chip with the exception of unplugging the cold start injector connector. I was very pleased.

As far as driving it made a night and day difference. It really woke up the engine and it has a lot better response. I need to come back and modify the spark tables because it was designed for cast iron heads and I am running aluminum heads.

So the ARAP bin is much more responsive AND has the highway mode?
How do I get my hands on a chip with it?
And how much of a difference will it make on my 88 Iroc with 3.70 gears???

Purchase a chip burner, uv eraser, and download the ARAP bin from one of the places listed in Traxion's prom buring article.

It tells you everything you need to purchase, where to find the supplies, and how to do it.

If you're currently running a stock chip with mods it should make a large difference. I've seen a few posts of people stating they had additional .3 or more improvement in their quarter mile times after installing the ARAP bin.

I checked the bin when I installed it and it does have highway mode enabled.

Good luck!

I guess that the ARAP bin is for the 350, but is there an ARAP bin for the 305?
Would like to burn the eprom with the ARAP bin so I have a starting point for my 305. Can I just change the values for the smaller injectors of the 305 (by using Tunercat). Is there a table in Tunercat for different injector sizes (haven't got Tunercat yet, but I'm going to)
But the most easy thing wold be a ARAP-bin for the 305 so I just could burn it right away, and then go from here...

Your best bet is to get the '89 305TPI/A4 code. Go to:

ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/pub/gmecm/bin_lib/

and save the APYM.BIN file. Have fun!

Yes, the 6E has a constant for injector size IIRC. If you had the PROM burning equipment, it's worth a try. Just save your original BIN or grab the BIN that Greg suggest in case it doesn't work.

That's the nice thing about PROM burning, you can try a lot of different things and see how they work for you. If I don't like the results, I just try something else. Costs nothing but a little time (and gas).
