Scanner

Well, hooked up my Sunpro scanner to my '88 GTA and found out that it doesn't read nearly as much as with 90 and up TPI cars. With the 90 and up ECMs, the scanner will read BLM/INT, O2 Crosscounts, vehicle spped, A/F ratio, PE% and a few other things that the same scanner won't read with my 165 ECM.
Is there any other scanner that would read all those parameters on the 165?
The lack of info defeats the purpose of buying the damned scanner. If I can't see the BLM/INT how am I supposed to tune my engine? The scanner would only tell me if the BLM cell are activated and which one is? This doesn't help with the tuning right?
Rick

Hmmmm, my cheesy $80 MPSI Pro-Link scan tool gives me all of those except %PE (never seen that one before on a MAF car) and A/F ratio, so I'd guess that your scanner isn't up to the task. :/ I know Diacom records practically everything the computer is reading, as do most of the free programs out there. You're right; you do need to see the BLM and INT as well as the BLM cell to help with tuning...

I didn't explain myself too good Greg.
You are right, there is no PE % on MAF systems. What I did whas change the years on the scanner from 1988 trans am to a 1992; that is how I got a glimpse of all the other parameters before the scanner told me there was an error (of course, wrong year)
Get it?
Where do I get the diagnosis software Greg? Can I use the cable from the scanner I have right now?
Thanks, Rick

Ahhh, I haven't tried that trick before on my scan tool, although it works fine telling it I have an '89 (since I'm running the 6E code) instead of an '87. I'll have to try that out sometime...

For free scanning software, go to Andrew Mattei's website at:

http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/dss.htm

and take a gander at what's there. I know a couple guys using Craig Moates' software, and I've contemplated using it. AFA the cable, I'm not sure.

Yep, I usually go there, although I dislike it more every time I go there. They're only 20 minutes from me, but they're usually disorganized, and too many people bring their trash and ***** cars and break down. The only reasons I keep on going back is that it's so close and I usually set my best times there. I also go to MIR in Budds Creek and 75-80 near Frederick every once in a while. MIR is over an hour away, 2+ hours if you hit traffic. 75-80 is always less than an hour and is the most-organized track I've ever been too since they assign you a lane and they run the lanes one at a time so things go quickly and everybody gets the same number of runs instead (instead of people hopping lanes all the time to see how many runs they can get in while others only get a few runs).

I asked cause I use to live in fredneck. I went to capital once and it was hilarious(before the time of the rice). Brothers would be in the stands betting on cars and if there car lost they would throw **** at it, as it came down the return road. That same day I saw a group of guys start an alcohol fire. IT was dangerous but at the same time funny cause the guys could not see what was burning them.

Sup Tyler.....hey man, my tranny has a broken booster spring something something; that's why I didn't run 12s.
Nah, for real, took it to my mechaninc today because it doesn't wanna shift into overdrive and he said it looks like it has some booster spring in the valve body that is broke. I Really don't think it made a difference in my times, but you never know.

Greg, if I tell the scanner the car is an 89 it works fine and also ads an extra parameter, Vehicle speed. I'm really disapointed about the stupid scanner, it's pretty much worthless tuning wise. I guess the only solution would be to switch to SD.
One last thing Greg; how can I possibly tune the car by just knowing what BLM cell the car is runing in?

You can't. You need to know the BLM, INT, and airflow in grams/second to be able to tune in the MAF tables (changing just one BLM cell) and injector constant (global change to all BLM cells). Of course, it's nice to be able to see everything else too.

Yep, go to Andrew Mattei's website at:

http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/dss.htm

and have a look. For MAF cars, it looks like the only free program is Craig Moates' program which can be found at:

http://members.tripod.com/moatesenheimer/gmecm/

Do a search for his name on this board and others and you'll find other references to him and his program.

Hey rick, I thinks its time to pull me motor. Should only take a week to go through it and stab in the mack daddy cam. Thats to bad about the trans hope those fools that built it gave you a warranty. Save up for that vigilante. Then youll be knocking on 12's door. Or spend 400 less and feed him some good old fashioned crack. Nitrous kicks @sss
