Burning 29C256s without problems

I’m from xtronics – hope everyone got their emulator working – if you missed it - there was a version change for the newer board – the old software won’t work with the new board and visa-versa.

I saw some discussion here about using the 29C256 to replace 27C256 chips. It should work fine as has been noted – with most systems YMMV. You can save the price and bother of the eraser and cut your program time down. The new Win_prg version runs very fast. If you do have problems with the 29C256 the 27SF256 is supposed to more closely replace the 27C256 – but it requires an adapter.

Programming problems – first let me assume you have the latest windows software or 3.60 of the DOS version. (3.6 eliminates the need to set your CMOS to the SPP printer port)

Number one cause of problems now is power saving mode; suspend, power down etc. need to be turned off in both the CMOS and in Windows. The manner that these ‘green’ features work depends on the BIOS chip of your computer motherboard – and there are a lot of differences out there.

Some virus scanners have also caused problems. Disable all other software before burning chips and don’t try to do some thing else while it programs (these FLASH parts program fast anyway).

Avoid WindowsME like the plague. Stick with 98SE. It breaks lots of software- not just ours.

If no other tasks are running you should be able to program FLASH parts from Windows – unfortunately – some computers (lots of laptops) have BIOS programs we can’t turn off running in background that can screw up the timing.

On a clean install of Win98 I have not had any problems – but if you have installed dirty software (think sound card drivers) that leaves tasks running it might be easiest to run fileprom in DOS.

If you have problems let me know – I’ll do anything I can to get you going.

One last point – there seems to be some confusion as to what a bin editor is – (it might mean something else in the EFI world than in the electronics world?) The programmer comes with a Bin or Hex editor – you can change values of different addresses – But there are no boxes saying this location will set the idle etc.

Also, the programmer does not include instructions on how to tune up a car ROM. All the programmer will do is put the information in the chip – you provide that information from someone else’s program.

Concerning the need for another program: Yeeeeeup. As pulled from the tech article here on this site...

You will need ANOTHER special program to read this BIN and allow you to modify it. This 'other' program (also known by the word 'Editor') is not supplied by the company that makes the Programmer. It is not supplied with your Programmer.

Hello xtronics.

I have fileprom v3.48. Can I get an upgrade for free to v3.60 ?

Also, the windows software I see on your web page is not a free upgrade. Is that correct?

If I buy the emulator, do I get the windows software for free?

Thanks!

DOS upgrades are $20 - Windows upgrades are $49.95 - you get the latest software with the purchase of any adapter.
