Anyone with a Miniram...I can't hack my TPIS chip to mod it.
Anyone with a Miniram...I can't hack my TPIS chip to mod it.
Well, I've got all my equipment finally, and I started by reading the "Level VI" TPIS chip that I originally bought with my Miniram setup over three years ago. The problem is that I can read the chip, and save the .BIN file to disk, but I can't get Tunercat to read the .BIN with the $8d definition file that I have. Tunercat gives an error message saying that I need a $26 definition file.
I've looked all over the archives and at DYI-EFI, and I can't find a definition file for any of the three tuners (Tunercat, GMEpro or WinBin). And Tunercat doesn't offer a $26 file.
I would really love to read this EPROM and tune from where TPIS left off, but obviously I can't do that from where I'm at right now.
Does anyone know of either:
1) Where can I find a definition file to read this TPIS EPROM, or another way around their little way of making it so I can't hack it for tuning?
2) Is there a good .BIN to start with in order to start fresh without even worrying about reading the TPIS EPROM.
The important aspects of the car is that it has a ZZ4 with the LT4 HotCam (218/228 duration, .525/.525 lift with 1.6 rockers). AFR 195cc aluminum heads, 10 to 1 compression, Miniram, 52mm throttle body, AFPR, 23 lb/hr injectors, 700R4 w/2400 stall converter, true 2.5" dual exhaust.
Any help would be appreciated.
:EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention that it's a 7730/16198262 ECM (Speed Density obviously) $8D code. The 16198262 is the Delphi equivalent to the 7730 BTW.
ROC, I'll answer your posted question here. The car ran a 12.720 with a crappy 2.05 second 60' time last weekend.....I wasn't hitting my throttle hard enough with my BFG drag radials that were just installed, since I'm still used to launching with street tires.

You won't be able to "find" a definition file for that TPIS chip. TPIS actually coded the prom id into it so that when you "tried" to open it as an 8d chip it would want a different definition file. That is usually the way that most aftermarket/pro chip burners do it, that way you can't open there chips and see whats been done. I highly doubt TPIS will tell you how to get around it.. Theoretically if you changed the PROM ID to one of a standard 8d chip it would work? But don't ask me how to do that... i don't have a clue.
Hope that helps,
Brendan

you probably have to use a hex editor to change the bin ID so that you can open it up w/ tunercat or something. There are a few hex editors at www.download.com and other software download archives. It may be as easy as opening a known bin, looking for the location of the bin ID and then using the heax editor to change the bin ID on the TPIS bin. Then again maybe not. Worth a shot though, maybe .5 hrs.

Thanks Lierch and James...
James....All I have is time...Ima gonna try to hack this puppy!!

Anyone else know of a .BIN I should try working with if I fail cracking the TPIS chip?...Thanks again.

Yes, what leirch said is a method used by some aftermarket eprom writers to "protect" their software. I know a few others that do this.
I am not certain about TPIS, but a few even move the tables around so a standard TDF won't work even if you change the PROM ID to the correct corresponding value. Or they define the value somewhere else.
I highly suggest running a "Binary File Compare" (TunerCat has a program with a 30 day trial period), to see ALL the differences between the TPIS and the stock BIN. If it is only the "values" within the constants and tables, then it is okay. But if it code or addresses within the actual program portion, then you should make a note of those differences.
If you get TunerCat's TDF Editor (also available for a 30 day trail), you can make all those changes to a special version of $8D. Also, you can even change the PROM ID it reads (like in your case) and then re-write with the correct corresponding PROM ID.

Thanks Glenn, I'm going to need to try your method out since I had no luck whatsoever last night cracking the code.
i WAS able to find "26" and change it to "8D" with the hex editor, but it still didn't allow me to read the chip correctly. Tunercat's software said that "Need the $8D Code to Read This ECM", which i WAS using, but it didn't read it for some reason. So it's definately more in depth than just using the hex editor.
I'll try your method, and hopefully can figure out how all this new software works, since I'm not used to programming anything at all. LOL.
Thanks
