Hook My Laptop To My ALDL

Can I make a cable to hook up my laptop COM1 port to my ALDL port on my 1986 IROC-Z? Can someone direct me to a good site that perhaps shows step-by-step how to do it?

I just made this one the other day. I'll be trying it out later this week hopefully.

This is essentially the unit that i am using as well. you are going to need a comm program. I would suggest that if they have a version for your setup that the DataMaster is a really good one. check this out:
http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/dss.htm Andrew has a lot of good info @ his site & if you so desire he has kits that you can buy to solder your own or you can just by the enitire thing yourself. He also has the best deals on the data master, that i have found. I have dont both (i gave one to a friend).

John Boy, did your circuit work? I was just wondering where did you connect the 12v to? I thought GM ECMs use 5 volts?

The <A HREF="http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/akmelect.htm">AKM</A> cable has a cigarette lighter adapter to supply 12V

I had my wife by me something @ a yard sale that plugged into a Cig lighter (does not matter what). Cut off the cord.

MAKE SURE, that you plug it into the car & check to see which one is +12 & which one is ground BEFORE you hook it to your circuit, you dont want to putting the power backwards across the regulator.
