scanner opinions
I have the 8746 TBI, looking for the cheapest scanner possible and I don't have a laptop yet so software is out of the question. What am I looking for in a scanner other than knock counts, BLM, TPS/IAC position, and the basics?

Find out when your local Sanp-On/Mac tool dealers are around, sometimes they have trade ins. Then snoop around you local dealer. I found 2 OTC scanners at a dealer once for $40 for the pair.

if you go by one of the local shops, and talk to the shop foreman, or maybe a head tech at a dealership, and get the heads up on when the snap-on truck comes by, you should be able to find a trade in. I had every truck (Snap-On, Matco, MAC Tools, Cornwell.) try and sell me trade in scanners, Snap-On wanted $315 for theirs, but the case was cracked, and there was some melted platic on the unit itself. I forget how much everyone else had them for. If the car shops are asses about it, go to a motorcycle shop, usually smaller, with more friendly techs, mostly b/c you're asking for car stuff, and they work on bikes, not stealing any job-security.. The trucks go to'em all. hope that helps.

Jon,
I just sold an old 486 to a lister for $50. That laptop is enough to run Diacom, as well as Craig Moates' FREE software! Cruise eBay for a cheap laptop and then buy an AKM cable and you're in for just over $100.
