In response to my unjustly closed thread

My timing question was about TOTAL advance
not base timing, which is low already.

So the base needs to stay at 6* and I guess I'll unfortunatly have to ask a more polite thread.

Thanks for the one response.

I am sorry, but I have been very ill lately and I have not been responding much.

Without altering the eprom, the simplest and easiest method of lower your your timing (Base + Relative - Knock Retard = Total Timing) is by a mechanical method, like changing the base timing in the distributor.

The Relative and Knock Retard part of the "Total Timing Equation" can only be controlled within the eprom. The amounts changed within the eprom is based on the software and various sensor inputs. Unless you are willing to alter the software, then your only other alternative to cause an affect to the Relative and Knock Retard components is to "fudge" the sensor input readings, like installing a known resistance value in one of the variuos sensors.

Unfortunately, while "fudging a sensor" will often (but not always) cause an affect on the Total Timing, it also affects a lot of other things; some that you don't want changed. It's kind of like hanging a picture and using a 25# sledgehammer to put in the nail.

So, you really have only two viable alternatives: Change the base timing of the distributor or alter the eprom. You may want to look into some ignition kits that give you a mechanical method of altering your timing on the fly. But that can end up costing a bit. Check with the Tech Board and Electrical Board regarding various ignition kits like MSD and Jacobs.

thanks, i appreciate it.

If I put in a Vacum or Mechanical advanced HEI distrubtor...
Would that throw a code?
It wouldn't put it into limp mode would it?

As long as the ecm sees all the signals your fine, ie EST and ref..
2/3 of the power of EFI is in timing control.
You'll get much further by prom burning.

Limp Home mode is ONLY when the Processor fails in some manner.

This list is about prom burning, undoing part of the system, because you don't want to do prom burning is enough to me to close or delete the thread.

Hey, you are right about what this forum is all about, but sometimes I get the impression that you act very rude towards some of us. For instance you have ignored 100% of my postings lately just because I happened to say something that you and Glenn happened to disapprove of, and you don't even bother to answer my emails when I tried to explain the situation and correct it....

All I did was make a mirror of the diy-efi bin library, which made Grumpy upset, but if you think about it I need no more permission to do that, since I bet the didn't ask GM for permission before they created the library in the first place. But maybe two wrongs don't make a right, but I feel it's unfair to just ignore me and don't even give me a chance to explain myself, but I guess that's just the way things are supposed to be around here.

I just try to help people in whatever way I can....

Hold on there grumpy

Don't assume anything...

I VERY MUCH SO want to do prom burning.
But if you look back you'll see many posts by me and my interest, i have the 85 delema, and for now the number one issue is to get rid of a severe knock that could destroy my issue, and untill I find an ecm to replace the 870, whatever it takes to save my engine is what im going to have to do!
Thanks for the posts.

No, it is not a matter of saying something that I do not approve. It was a matter of that it was EXPLAINED to you, and you CONSTANTLY want to argue about it and you made yourself a real nuisance. AND after being warned to stop, you continued to make yourself a nuisance to the point of coming very close to being banned.

Give it up already. You copied another groups work and when a representative from that group told you that they did not want their site "mirrored", rather than being an adult and saying "I'm sorry"...you PERSISTED in a childish behaviour to make yourself right in your action and insist that you did nothing wrong whatsoever.

Much like right now, in bringing this garbage up yet AGAIN.
