Recommended Scanner?

Glenn suggested to me on the TPI board to get a scanner to better diagnose my by mpg problem. Sounds good and will probably save me some money in the long run. I don't currently have a laptop, but can get one. What is a good recommended scanner for a 350 MAF car? Has anyone ever tried using one of those air/fuel ratio guages?

Thanks.

Diacom always worked for me(its a little pricey though). Craig Moates software seems to be liked by MANY and is free, not as flashy as Diacom but who cares, its free and works. Do a search for Craigs software, you will find all you need to know about it.

Once you have your car tuned correctedly thye can be a course indication of what you have AFR wise.
Tuning to a particulat O2 voltage is folly. The oem ones are sensitive to exhaust back pressure, and EGT.
A Wide Band O2 sensor is a different beast, and comps for temp, and is barely effected by backpressure.

I recently bought the Ease Personal scan tool. http://www.obd2.com/personal_scantool.htm

I'm not a electronics techie and decided to buy a package kit.

The personal version sells for around $315. You can receive a 10% rebate if you buy it through Mike Meek. His review of the Ease scan tool is listed below along with contact information.

3.1, do a search on "Craig" or "Moates" and you will get ALL the information you need on Craig's FREE scan tool.

A LOT of MAF guys are using it with good success and I see no reason to spend money on a scan tool when Craig's is free.

Even though I have Diacom, during the winter, I plan to try running Craig's software for my SD car because it gives me the freedom to modify the data within the ALDl with the PROM, and then use Craig's software to display.

There is a LOT more info in the ECM than is transmitted in the ALDL, but the problem is that ALL scan tools expect the data to be in a particular order and of a particular type. Only by having access to Craig's software where you can change its display can you add new data to the ALDL and then display it.

Bruce and Tim can probably see the advantages of this.
