If I remember right??.... up to '89 had the chip that could be replaced..... and the 90+, you had to reprogram the computer for performance.
Which is cheaper to upgrade?

It's all wrong actually. You can remove the chip and reprogram it for any computer controlled thirdgen. For TPI cars: up to 89 they used the MAF system. In 89 VATS was added and a 6E calibration was used (a little better then the previous one) and from 90-92 a speed density system was used which used a chip twice as big (memory wise).

GM switched to programmable computers in the LT1's in 1994. 1993 and older LT1's, TPI, TBI, etc all use removeable chips that can be erased and reprogrammed.
