There's a fellow that was helping convert my program core to C++, which would be easily migrated to the palm. I need to check in with him and see how he's doing...

I finally got it to talk with my ecm, had a real problem with the serial routines. So converting the BASIC source to C is coming along altho the source code will look nothing like the original BASIC because the two are very different. I'd like to get everything working with my laptop first and then start moving it to the palm. It's going to take awhile but you can follow the progress on my web site www.rayisd.com (nothing there yet, i'll put up a section when I get a chance). I'd like to make this work with every ecm /pcm that I can, How do I find out what the data streams are.
http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/tpialdl.txt and
http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/a172b.txt show the 89 & 93 LT1 streams but how about others. I made it talk with my dad's 95 5.7 truck but the data stream that I got back doesn't jive with my 87 stream ( I assume they won't be the same though). Any ideas

Ok, got something posted http://www.rayisd.com/gm_ecm
I'll work on the code as time permits and keep the web site updated. It will probably be slow going but I'll get it done, now if I can just find my round-tuit

I only have a palm IIIx, as too the windows based ones
. I honestly try to avoid windows based anything these days but would assume they are very different.

Windows is a big, fat, bloat-ware that carries all applications along with it in its fate of hogging vast resources for next to nothing in terms of necessity.
Only folks who have been beating the keyboard for more than a few years know life without Windows. That's a shame, because there's more to PC functionality than that seen through the eyes of BG. Anyone who is truly serious about OS efficiency and getting the most out of their PCs will grimace at the mention of Windows and smile when you speak of X-Windows, Unix, or Linux.
But hey, Windows is easy, and THAT is why it is so popular. Every half-wit, down to 5-year-old retards and Somalian refugees, can 'get on the net' through Windows and other Bloat-Ware like AOL. Remember when CTRL-C meant more than 'C)opy'?
I must admit, all the momentum built up by the ever-growing trash-heap of PC users has certainly made for a richer PC environment. Don't think there's a Utopia beyond that which we have today.
That said, I guess Windows is a good thing, it just makes folks cringe at the inefficiencies. If it weren't for Windows, we wouldn't really need these 2GHz machines, but it has acted as a motivator.
In automotive terms, I'd view Windows as an ever-increasing mandate for heavier and heavier vehicles (SUV come to mind?). Consumers want to maintain at least the same speed, so technology is driven to develop more horsepower. Only in PC terms, there are no emissions laws, so they can pour on the juice. Now you end up with 10-ton bricks of lead being pushed down the internet superhighway by fusion-powered rocket-packs of Pentium-4s, and we're all choking on the fumes of obsolescence. And the traffic sucks. But you get to meet interesting folk, whereas before only auto mechanics were out on the road, and the roads were dirt & gravel. Sometimes there were no roads, just lightly-beaten paths through the brush.
Enough bantering, Linux is a good thing. A 'Return to the Eve' so to speak. Maybe we can strap one of those fusion packs to our old Chevette?

I agree with Craig Moates ...
But, almost everyone is using windows anyway ...
This is an example of OS efficiency:
http://www.freesco.org
It is
a simple bridge with up to 3 Ethernet segments
a router with up to 3 Ethernet segments
a dialup line router
a leased line router
an Ethernet router
a dial-in server with up to 2 modems
a time server
a dhcp server
a http server
a print server (requires TCP/IP printing client software)
It is based on Linux, and runs on a single bootable floppy diskette! You don't even need a hard disk!
You only need an old 386 with 6 mb ram.
I have used one for a few month now and it works great!

I agree that windows is not a great operating system, but it is universal and practially everone has it. I can move quciker through dos even than to click here and there, but It would be nice to have a nice display and the faster speed of the windows based pda's to use with the scanner software than what the palm offers. I like the palms but I think it would be a lot better if it were possible to convert it to work on a windows based palm. Didnt you say that it was being converted to C right now. That is able to be used in windows anyway isnt it? I cant program but I have read about it some and am very computer literate so I understand a lot of what is going on. I dont know if it would have to be compiled different or the code slightly changed, but if you are putting it in a language that can be used in windows how hard would it be to make a windows version. Remember: I am asking a question, I dont know how easy it would be. This is just how it occured to me. Also, it runs off of dos right now right? If so can the windows based pda's run dos based programs or not?
Just some stuff to think about or make me look stupid(maybe both) but thanks for your time.

I can see it now, cars pulling over to the side of the road everywhere and they have a blue screen on there dash "Windows GPF" or you push a button on the dash and the car locks up
They are already putting Windows CE on car stereos, windows is about the most bloated and unstable not to mention security hole ridden POS that I've come across but hey this was about ecm software
(can you tell I'm an Unix System administrator)
There is no reason that this won't run on windows in a dos window, just might lock up the serial port or it will be slow sometimes and you will have to reboot but if your using windows your probably already used to that, sorry couldn't help myself...
My first plan was to port this to linux but Craig confinced me that the palm would be cool, does the windows based PDA have a dos window?? But anyway I'll see if I can get some coding done today, deer hunting sucked this morning.

See, I dont know if it has a dos window, but I dont have one yet. I would like to get one, and have even thought about a palm instead, but I really like the better displays and sound. Also the new windows based pda's run at 206 Mhz and the fastest palm based that I have seen are 33Mhz. Would it be possible to put the palm os on one of the faster ones. Do you think that this scanner software is going to run ok on 16-33 Mhz. If you couldnt load the palm os, how about dos? It would just be nice to have the better speed, display and sound.
Thanks
Ben
