'730 Vats

Hey guys,

I just swapped to a '165 from the old dredded '870 so that I could swap to a chip that would run a 350, now I'm thinking of going to the '730 because some serious tuning is the ultimate goal. Without being to hard on me what are the major pro's to programming the '730 vs the '165, other than the obvious sensor differences.
Also if/when I swap in the '730 I'm going to need a 305 chip to run on, do all SD 305 proms have VATS ? Is there a work around?

There is alot of differences code wise because of the different sensors. The 730 is newer and more refined, which is alot right there.
Getting GMEPro or Tunercat will get you a enable / disable for VATS.

How do the two different ecms "handle" the engine. It was described to me by mike davis (great guy) that the '165 is less acurate because of the MAF, however I understand the map sensor to be a possibly "cheap" sollution to maf, is it really more acurate? Do the two different ecms ACT differently to sensor data?

Well, the '870 could have run with a 350 chip, because that was the ECM in Vettes back in '85.

Both sensors have their ups and downs. As far as sensor response time, the MAF uses a heated filament and the MAP uses a diaphragm with a load cell on it. If you turn off a lightbulb the filament is still glowing red after a couple 10ths of a second. That is where hysteresis plays a role in the MAF sensor. With the MAP sensor, you are actually requiring the computer to calculate an airflow. Respone time also varies, but it is pretty hard to notice a difference.

Remember, they started using both MAP and MAF for later cars. -Matt-

Hmm...

I think im gunna have to get ahold of a '730

Is there any difficulty differences in tuning the 165 and 730?

The biggest difference is tuning the fuel tables. With SD you have "VE Tables" which take a bit of time to "refine". However, when you change a specific "RPM/Load", the change affects ONLY that "RPM/Load" with SD. In that respect, I prefer SD.

With MAF, adjusting the "MAF Scalar Tables" is NOT for a newbie. Also, a change to the MAF Scalar Tables MAY correct one particular RPM/Load but cause a previously valid RPM/Load to become incorrect.

This is why I say "tuning" the fuel tables on SD is easier; it takes awhile but it is less dangerous than the MAF Scalar Tables.
