Remote Mounted PROM, 7747 w/EBL

Hey all. I have the 7747 w/EBL. I want to make my PROM remotely mounted. As in, make a socket with a cable and another socket to make the PROM easily accesible, and the other end plugged into the ECM. Right now, the ECM is laying on the passenger floor board, and is ALWAYS in the way of people getting in and kicking it. So, I was thinking about making the PROM and socket remote mounted, this way it is easier to put it in, and to hook up the AUTOPROM without having the ECM on the floor. Same goes for the phone cable for the EBL datalogging too. That is easy enough though.

So, has anybody done this? And will adding wire between the PROM and the socket have any adverse affects to the ECM reading the PROM?

Usually cables for the PROM don't work. You can try something up to maybe a foot and see if it works. Sometimes wrapping the cable with aluminum foil and grounding one end helps. A while back someone posted a setup that will work to almost any length. It used differential line drivers/receivers at both ends.

Well, I was thinking of using shielded twisted pairs, I have some shielded wire that has like 6 or 8 conductors too. I only wanted it less than a foot. I'll have to try it out and see what happens. My only concern is using the autoprom, it has an 8 inch ribbon cable, and if I add 8-10 inches of cable, will it still work. I guess I'll have to try it out and see what happens.

i was able to return the ECU to its rightfull place when i added the prominator. all i have now is the small cable for whats up and another to the laptop as needed. my wife would regularly kick the prom out of the ECU with her size 12's.

I posted a reply in the other thread that Craig sells a three foot ribbon cable for the AutoProm. Ive been using it without any other connections hooked up to it for two weeks now and it works perfectly. Its just long enough to get the AP into my console. Dont know if it will work with a 747 im using a 730 ecm..

I cant do that with the autoprom, I have to disconnect the ribbon cable, upload the bin, verify, emulate, hook the cable back up, turn on the key, and hope it works. Usually takes less than 10 tries. It's been that way since I had the autoprom and the latest tunerpro, and apu firmware update. I never got it figured out. Hence the reason for a remote mounted PROM socket. I guess I could get a prominator, never thought about it though with the autoprom.

the prominator just has the ribbon and the whats up uses what appears as a telephone cable(sorry for the lack of a better word). the prominator never fails connection and neither does the WU. flawless. bin selector is velcrowed above the shifter to dash. 6 bins. only thing it is married to ECU.
