n00B questions
n00B questions
Hey guys,
I've got my engine combo figured out, and all of the parts bought. Now I'm coming down to the ecm side of things. Let me tell you what I have.
89 Iroc z
5.7 Tuned port
Automatic
Engine
Rebuilt 5.7 bored .030 over
Vortec Heads
SD intake base
Ported Plenum
ZZ4 Cam
AFPR
Underdrive Pulleys
Air Foil
24lb LT1 Injectors
Headers and hooker cat-back exhaust
I understand that since I have maf, the car will probably run ok with the stock injectors, but I do not think that they will do the job, and is why I got the LT1's. My question is, can I run the LT1 injectors before I get the chip burned for it (as I intend to do)? Or should I run the stock 22's? I have researched prom burning, and I dont think I have time right now, and want to get someone trustworthy to do it. (anyone out there near western Md?) I want to get into burning later when I have more time to learn it and tune. For now, I just want to get my car running. Any suggestions?

The car will run w/ 24s without a tune. It will not run as well as it would with a tune that correctly identified the 24s. Running the 22s until you burn your own chip will also be a fine option.
Re: n00B questions
I would like to be able to avoid taking the plenum and runners back off just to switch the injectors. So there arent really any bad reprocussions? Could I adjust the fuel pressure to compensate somewhat?
I read somewhere that you are not supposed to "beg" for chips to be burned. How do I go about finding a good chip burner and paying them for their time? Is there a directory here or something like that? I want to get into chip burning, but I'm too much of a novice right now, and I really want to drive my car!

I've also read about guys tweaking "highway" mode and getting pretty decent mileage. If I could get around 25 miles per gallon on the highway, while making 350+ flywheel horsepower, I will be very happy, as this is a daily driver. I want to get into burning, but I dont want to wait to learn all of this before I start enjoying the car.

rustbird77, best bet is to hit the regional boards to see if there is someone in your area. Only place bin begging is not allowed is the diy_prom forum.

Re: n00B questions
This post was locked (and it should be) as DIY Prom is for "Doing It Yourself"...not prom referrals etc.
However, I wanted to point out something you said which is wrong. You should learn eprom burning BEFORE you made modifications, not after. If you get a "modified prom", it is NOT the place to start as you don't know what that person modified (or why).
The best place to start, is always with a "virgin" bin so you can document the changes and see "what works & what doesn't".
And, the best time to start learning eprom burning, is before you make modifications. You can get better performance, fuel economy & emissions with a bone stock engine just by making changes to the eprom...but it takes time to learn.
The guys that frequent this board are very helpful and always willing to help a new guy...as well all were there in the beginning.
Reconsider your choice and consider getting into eprom burning as well as frequenting the Regional Board in your area to find someone to help teach you "hands-on". And do it, not with the objective that you want a "bin", but you want them to show you how to do it.
Now, I must close the post (again).
