aldl communication error help
i am about ready to smash my laptop hardcore into a million pieces
i have not been able to datalog/scan for a while now specs below than read my story:
ok its an dell latitude c610 1.0ghz p3
running windows xp sp1
programs:
tuner pro rt
datamaster
car:
89 camaro iroc 5.7 165 ecm 6e mask
i bought this laptop a year ago and when i got it at first it was great i used it to scan aldl and tune with my prominator.
one day it wouldnt connect to my ecm on my camaro, so i thought my cable broke and that was that, well recently i borrowed my friends aldl cable same as mine and it didnt work so it got me thinking, first thing i did is it was time for a reformat on my laptop so i reformated and did a fresh installation of xp. after that i than switched to tunerpro rt and it says connected but the packet error just rises constantly and no actual data comes through sample rate was 9hz.
so than i break out my old laptop compaq presario 266mhz on win 98se and using my cable it connects and datalogs fine with same version of tunerpro rt. as well as datamaster so that rules out my car, and the cable im using
so from there i check my com port settings there are no errors and the configuration is as follows:

i have tried changing my com port in my bios to com port 2 and in the driver and makes no difference. in addition the serial port is enabled in my bios as well as infared is disabled.
i kind of give up i called and talked with craig moates about this and he says all my settings were setup fine in tunerpro rt and on my com port and i should be able to scan
also he asked if my check engine light flashes once when i turn it to on postion and it does and goes steady.
we tried messing with the settings like disabling the fifo buffer, changing the speed, changing flow control, changing baud rate.
also tried a "test for valid aldl cable settings" before i called craig and we changed the settings, it said it was fine and worked. that was with the cable connected to my car. than we tried messing with the settings like disabling the fifo buffer, changing the speed, changing flow control, changing baud rate. and tried the "test for valid aldl cable settings" with it disconnected from the car and it says error.
and now it wont connect at all.
i also went to a surplus store and picked up a serial modem and it connects to the internet fine, as well as a serial mouse works. i have also run the dell diagnostics and the serial port check comes back good.
at this point i give up any ideas?

Re: aldl communication error help
The problem is not the serial cable, and I doubt it's the computer. The first thing that I'm not seeing is whether or not you have a 10K resistor between pins A & B on the ALDL line. Some interfaces (like Craigs) have a switch to enable this. Make sure that you have it enabled. If your interface does not have a switch, or does not automatically have 10K across A&B, go to radio shack and buy a thing of 10k resistors (about $1). Place one between pins A & B. 1227165 requires this in order to dump ALDL data.
Go back to COM 1, and don't mess with the port settings - the software will change the port settings on your behalf anyway, so you don't need ot mess with anything there. In TunerPro, make sure you get "Cable working" (or whatever success message there is when you test for valid cable). Once you've got that, you know you have TunerPro configured correctly.
Then go back and load 1227165_6E.ads and try to connect. Make sure TunerPro is set to MAX232 and COM1.
If that doesn't work, I'd suspect something is wrong with the wiring of the vehicle itself.

Re: aldl communication error help
If TunerPro reports that the cable is working, then your laptop serial port is working (TunerPro sends out data and verifies that the echo comes back). So, if the serial port is working, and the cable is working, and the car is working, then I don't know! You have me stumped.

no it said before that cable settings are sucessfull and got packet errors,
but at the moment it says error so it no longer connects, or says cable settings are successful
