Burn my own off the hop? and memcal?

I put a 350 (.030 over) block into a 305 car. Car is a 89, TPI setup and computer are a 86. I do plan on experimenting with burning my own proms so I'm debating whether to continue my search for a factory 350 prom to replace the 305 or just to by a programmer and do a factory bin off the hop. I see some prom burners on ebay for $40 or less, though where is everybody getting the eeprom now adays? Seems the atc9c259 in no longer available at digikey.

Now, is the memcal the same for the 305 and 350 cars? I understand the memcal contains resistors for limp home mode. If they are different, can the 305 memcal be changed to 350 values?

thanks,

Mike

memcal is physically interchangeable, but the netres by it's nature is unique to each and is "unprogramable" it's literally just resistors.

better off just getting programming stuff, you'll want it later anyways, i've never regreted owning my tuning stuff. besides just get the burning equipment and burn a stock chip, check out moates.net for the stuff

Re: Burn my own off the hop? and memcal?

The calpack, this is a resistor network in a 16 pin dip? I have number 16055376. There also another 14 pin dip IC CTS8615, or 16055375. The memcal is 16035006.

So the 16055376 is unique to the 305 TPI car? Is there a source for resistor values inside this network so that I can hardwire actual resistors inplace suitable for the 350?

Also, is the calpack only used during some type of failure, or is it used until the engine goes into closed loop aswell?

Thanks,

Mike

Here's the only info i have. Its a diagram of the netres for a 165 ecm. Im almost certain its for a 350but dont qoute me on that. compare it to your chips and if they match i would go with your memcal as is.

Hey mmaki and any body else who downloaded the file i posted. It is not for a 350 netres! I dont know what its for but it definately is not for a 350.I finally located my misplaced ABYA memcal for my IROC and did some testing on it and it bears no resemblance to that file. It turns out the 305 and the 350 share the same netres circuits. Mine are the same numbers that you posted. I guess it has to do with the injector sizes vs cid.

This is not an issue with the MAF setup that you have. It's the SD setup which has far more control in the netres that the memcal becomes an issue.

You can just burn a 350 bin onto your 305 memcal. And YES, you should get into prom burning by all means. There is a lot more "tuning" you can do with the equipment that is far beyond anything you can do with a "mail order" tuner.

The biggest issue, there are so many things (like fan temp, TCC locking, P/E TPS% engagement, etc) that you have never thought of, that you can only determine the "best setting" once you play with it. And with some things (like the TCC locking), a lot of it is your own personal preferences.

Some guys want the TCC to lock as soon as possible and others never want it to lock. But you will need to play with this to determine what you actually prefer.
