I notice in my logs I sometimes see some retard degrees without knock counts, and other times I see data I'd expect: increased counts and some retard.

Does the '89 165 computer "learn" where to take knock out and do it preemptively? It looks this way but I don't like to assume.

The ALDL PA3 counter value is only the upper byte of data. So there can be knock counts that don't show up in the ALDL data, but the retard does. This is what you are seeing.
