7747 WinALDL Data Logging / O2 Sensor?

I've posted a couple screen shots of the Excel file from my WinALDL Data Logging.

I have a very large number of O2 volts very low, and some almost normal looking O2 volts. I have new O2 sensor, but I'm wondering if should I upgrade to a heated O2 sensor and move the heated O2 sensor downstream in the exhaust system? Would the heated O2 sensor provide better / more stable O2 volt readings to the ECM? Is this kind of a typical problem with O2 volts readings with the older 160 baud ECM's?

Thanks,
dave w

In closed loop the O2 sensor reading is not supposed to be stable.

Thanks for the reply RBob. I understand the O2 sensors will fluctuate in closed loop, but readings going all the way down to .004 Volts is normal? In my data log, I've got several dozen readings of 0.004 Volts.

Check the wire to the O2 sensor. It may be laying on an exhaust pipe which will cause the low reading. At the same time, the first log is pretty bad. The time stamp is all over the place which means that the connection is flaky.

O2 Sensor wire is good ... the O2 sensor is new.

I used the Excel Program to "SORT" by RPM (lowest ~ highest) ... so yes the time stamps will be all over the place. I'm not really new to EFI, nor am I really new to Excel. I am somewhat new to winALDL and the 7747 ECM.

I was thinking my O2 volts would vary from 0.450 ~ 0.850 volts if the fuel map is close? With dozens and dozens of O2 volts reading 0.004, maybe I'm actually running lean?

I think I might try lowering the BPW from 134 to 130 and see what happens with the O2 sensor, data logging volts. I don't think I can fry a piston if I go rich with the BPW. I would think if I go rich on the BPW, the O2 sensor volts should increase?

Thanks for the reply.

What brand O2 sensor is in there?

Just wondering Dave, are you using a heated O2 sensor?

Where is it currently located? Factory location?

Currently, I am using a single wire O2 Sensor.

Currently, the O2 Sensor is in the factory cast exhaust manifold.

I'm thinking about switching to a Heated O2, just to see what happens?

Best bet would be to get an AC Delco O2 sensor. Either an AFS-20 or AFS-21, and leave it in the CI manifold.

Re: 7747 WinALDL Data Logging / O2 Sensor?

Hey RBob/Dave

I had to go to the top of this thread to make sure I was understanding was Dave wanted to do...

"Would the heated O2 sensor provide better / more stable O2 volt readings to the ECM? Is this kind of a typical problem with O2 volts readings with the older 160 baud ECM's?"

I have been looking through the various threads and using the search. I don't think the stock ECM is capable of using the Wide Band to do any Calibrating?? I know that there is a modified bin? But is the Wide Band O2 just for Datalogging and Tuning?

Sorry guys if my question is way out in left field... But I am just about to embark on chip burning/tuning and this thread and question caught my eye.

So, as far as I know/believe a Wide Band O2 is used to help a person "Tune" a chip better? Assuming a stock ECM, RBob the EBL mod for the factory computer, is that capable of "Using" a wide band O2 for fuel adjustments?

Thanks guys

This is quite the learning curve for me...

Heated O2 Sensor and Wide Band O2 Sensors are very different subjects. Yes, the Wide Band O2 sensor is typically used for Datalogging and Tuning. The Heated O2 sensor is typically used when the O2 sensor is not located in the exhaust manifold. My question ... "Would the heated O2 sensor provide better / more stable O2 volt readings to the ECM?" is not an easy Yes / No. The single wire O2 sensor design relies on the heat of the exhaust manifold to operate correctly. Most likely I have problem with my O2 sensor, but the jury is still out deliberating, lots of data to review.

The EBL system has made some very nice advances to the 160 baud ECM. I'm thinking the EBL system would make for a nice upgrade to my vehicle. The only "con" thought I have toward the EBL is it's not a PCM.

I'm leaning toward using an 8192 baud rate PCM when I upgrade to an electronic overdrive automatic transmission. I really like the fact that I've already learned how to tune the newer 8192 baud PCM's with DataMaster. If I did not have plans for an electronic overdrive transmission, I would use the EBL system. See attached picture of my 8192 baud PCM test bench.

Dave

Thanks for answering my question.

I thought wide band and heated O2 sensors were one and the same!

That test bench is "insane" to be able to see everything interact and simulate changes must be enlightening to say the least.

Dare I ask what "PCM" you are running?

I know I am no where near the level of knowledge and experience of a lot of the members here, but I figured I would start out with the TPI and TBI systems and ECM's.

Who knows maybe I will be able to someday run the 4l60e in my Camaro, with the distributor less coil per cylinder system (Yikes)

It's an early PCM from a 1993 - 1995 GM pickup. The one pictured is 16168625.
