I need help understanding this.
I seriously don't understand this whole prom thing. I read the sticky's but most of them dont work.
What i need to know is.
What is a chip and is there one already installed in the ECU or do i need to install it myself?
Would it be easier to to get the USB cable and just program the ECU from there?
Where can i get the cable from?
I've very dumb on the aspect of this whole thing. It would be great to get some help on it.

Too broad a question. You need to study up a bit. Check this out....
https://www.thirdgen.org/promintro
Consider buying a service manual for your car.
Yes you car has a chip. Called an eprom. your ECU # is 1228746.
You need to keep stock chip-eprom safe unmolested and burn a replacement chip. See Craig Moates for hardware choices. chips, burners emulators are hardware. Scanning datalogging software is like winALDL(I think easier to use) and TunerProRT(more advanced IMO). you need a datalogging cable. Build your own or buy at Moates.
Go to TBI section and read "come in for free tune". A sticky.

Nope that is an extendo for those people that need longer cable. I think moates sells auto prom or ostrich. auto prom may get you started at lease expense. look over his site carefully.

In the end you may be better of with this http://dynamicefi.com/ connect to the laptop and load your stock or modified calibration. EBL replaces the whole stock slow ECM, plug and play.

Head over to the sticky's on the EFI & ECM board (next one down in the list). There is a picture that shows the PROM, CALPAK, and a MEMCAL.
If your car is a TBI then the ECM has the separate PROM and CALPAK. To do any tuning you will need various pieces of equipment. And mesh them together. Which is another reason thomas1976 mentioned the EBL. It is truly the single best way to tune TBI set ups.

Re: I need help understanding this.
A bit of advice- If you can't find at least some of the info you are asking about by searching, then you are NOT ready to rip into your car and make it not work. Almost all the questions you are asking are on here somewhere. I did say 'almost all' (NOT all), but the starting point basics are absolutley here.
This is a big project, and my spidey sense says you are not ready. I know because even after a bunch of time searching/reading/interpreting/comparing, it still took a lot of time and effort to make the car run, and its still not exactly where it needs to be for me to be satisfied.
Please don't be offended. Its not the intent of this reply.
