Prom burning equipment needed?
Prom burning equipment needed?
Posted this request at the TunerPro forum also...but no responses so far, I'll be using the TunerPro software.
New to prom burning and would like to have a list of hardware that I will need to begin burning/programming.
Will be working exclusively on OBD1 TPI and 88-95 Chev/GM trucks. I would like to start with the 88-95 TBI trucks since I have extra ecms and proms in case (ie when) I mess up. Will expand to the TPI MEMCAL at some near point.
Any help putting a list together would be appreciated. I have an extra laptop and would like to make one order from ie Moates. cables, extra proms, adapters, burners etc.
Simply want to buy what I need and would like to avoid buying what I don't.
Thanks
Ed

Re: Prom burning equipment needed?
what you need for a TBI ecm
1. burner(Burn 2, Pocket Programmer 2 or 3, ect.)
2. ALDL cable(either USB or Serial)
3. Adapter for switching from 24 to 28 pin chip(moates sells the G2 and its great)
4. 24 pin dip socket(optional but recommended, because without it you must solder the G2 adapter to the board)
5.Zif socket(again optional but recommended for ease of chip swap)
6. Chips(most common would be 27sf512, they run about 5 bucks each, but can be found cheaper)
other than that just set your laptop up with tuning software and read on how to do it

You didn’t mention tuning which is what you’ll have to do after programming a chip. If you plan on tuning, get these things from Moates.net. It’s everything you need and it will make the process of burning & tuning a breeze. Yea, you can save a few bucks with other, unintegrated stuff, but none of it will be as powerful and as time saving.
AutoProm – Allows real-time emulation and will burn most any chip (Order only the 27SF512 chips. You won’t need the 29F040. They will substitute if you request it).
http://www.moates.net/apu1-autoprom-package-usb-version-p-54.html?cPath=64
HDR1 - If you will need to save the MEMCAL's PROM program before you begin modifications (a good idea), get this adapter. Install it and extract and save the original bin file.
http://www.moates.net/hdr1-memcal-header-p-52.html?cPath=64
G1 – Plugs in into MEMCAL to hold a chip or an emulation cable from the AutoProm and allows instant chip/cable changes if used with a ZIF socket.
http://www.moates.net/g1-memory-adapter-tpi-etc-p-32.html?cPath=64
S2 – ZIF socket that plugs into the G1 allowing easy insert of chip or emulation cable. A must-have
http://www.moates.net/s2-aries-28pin-zif-socket-p-44.html?cPath=26
Cost for the above approx $385, but nothing is as self-contained or efficient IMO. Other than the AutoProm that applies to any OBD-I, I’ve listed things needed for a TPI ECM (eg – 1227730). I believe the same will apply to those for a TBI. They’re all GM. If any questions call 225-341-3547 from 10am-6pm CST Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I’m not shilling for them – just a very satisfied user.
Hope this helps. I know I needed it when I got started.
