730 ECM Swap and no ALDL Output

Sorry guys. I've been searching this for the last 2 days on here trying to find my issue and I've come to just putting a new post up.

I did a 730 swap on my 87 IROC(original 305 TPI) using Mike Davis's method of using an adapter harness. Car fires up and runs great. I'm runing a 383 HSR with 6 spd now.

Problem is datalogging. ECM flashes 3 12s when AB are grounded.

When I connect my MPSI scantool to it, I get no data. I have tried several different combos to enter into it and nothing.(91 305 Z, 92 305 Z, 92 350 Z...original bin file is AXXC 5.0 5 spd TPI bin...my chip is actually a AXXC chip on my adapter). I tried my Tunerpro RT last night as well and got nothing too...but I'm less sure it could connect as I haven't spent much time getting the proper files set up for the datastream. I had to fool with the 165 some last year to get it connected.

I read here about pins E and M being swapped between the 165 and 730. I checked my ALDL and there is 0 resistance between those pins in my car, so that tells me they are connected in the harness as the wiring schematic showed. That tells me that all the posts about swapping those 2 wires don't apply to my car to get it to read(correct?).

I checked my adapter cable(between ECMs) and the A8 line on the 165 ecm is connected to the BA8 line as directed.

What else could it be? Bad ECM(I bought it off ebay about 7 yrs ago)?

Thanks for any insight...it feels like the answer is right in front of me...but I'm missing it...so sorry if this is an easy answer and you've answered it 100 times before.

Greg

Re: 730 ECM Swap and no ALDL Output

I've had issues with the MPSI 9000 on '90 - '92 TPI cars. IIRC, I had to use the '90 year in the set up.

No need for a 10K on A&B. The $8D code doesn't chatter, just need to send a packet request each time.

Hmmm...OK. I think I avoided the 90. I'll try that tonight.

Does my reasoning sound right that my ALDL is set up right to communicated with my scantools as E and M are connected in the harness already?

Thanks!

Re: 730 ECM Swap and no ALDL Output

Tried the 90 setup tonight a couple times and nothing. Checked and the SES light comes on, flashes very quickly(almost doesn't really go out...but is definitely a quick flash) then goes on solid. I think that says the ecm and PROM are OK.

Car fires up and runs OK, doesn't sound quite right, but running a helluvalot better than my 165 did in limp home mode. I'd say its running strong...but I haven't tried to drive it yet. SES goes out when I start the car.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

The MAF TPI cars do have E & M tied together as they did both 160 & 8192 baud. This should be OK for use with the '7730 ECM. Don't know why it wouldn't. Can pop the terminal out of location E and tape it off.

The SES blink is good along with the SES turning off once the car starts.

Re: 730 ECM Swap and no ALDL Output

Got it!

It was the MPSI scantool. I uploaded into Tunerpro the Super AUJP datastream file and it connected almost instantly. Evidently the 730 datastream file I tried to use from the website before didn't work the greatest. So car is running and my 7 yr old hardware seems to be all good!

Thanks for the help Rbob...now to relearn tuning with SD!
