Initial SA -- when is it used exactly?

After searching the forum and reading the tuning guide again I want to be sure I understand when exactly the "SA - Initial SA" is used.

I know that you set the base timing at the distrib (with ESC disconnected) to some value (lets say 6*) and then set the Initial SA in the BIN to the same value. If I understand this correctly the only effect this has on the tune is during crank? As soon as the engine fires up, the ESC takes over and this value is canceled out? I believe the intention is increase how quickly the engine starts during crank..?

Is this an accurate understanding? Does it do anything more for me?

That and in limp mode (code 42 or a dead ECM). Note that it is the EST (electronic spark timing) system. ESC is the knock detection and control system (electronic spark control).

Read post #4.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...cs-anyone.html

I believe initial spark has somerthing to do with ability to retard timing for whatever routines are demanded. The dist is 360. divided by 8 = 45 degress of usable timing post to post. 6-8-10 initial advance appears to be about right.

What you see in datalogs is actual timing. Disregard initial timing value as it is accounted for in calculation.

Good question.
