Tuning Part throtte in Open Loop in 8d
To start off....engine is a 383 HSR with a 8D 730 ECM w/Narrowband controlling ecm, but have WB02 pumping into datalog with 'O-meter' on dash.
I have been messing with tuning the VE tables for about 2 or 3 months now. Don't read into that I've been messing with it daily or anything. Been tuning it as I Can...typically 1 tune a day when I get to drive it.
Anyway, I've got it tuned it so its mainly rich or close to stoich via the BLMs. I've been using VEPhd when I can get it to work(I say that as it quit working on the last datalog a couple weeks back and haven't tried it since as I went on vacation...something odd there). Anyway, I tune it, get it adjusted, then smooth the table manually to get it to look better. This causes some issues of course with some areas going way rich as I typically don't remove fuel doing this.
Anyway, now onto my question. Is it beneficial at all, using a WB02, to tune in Open Loop to get the WB to 14.7:1. Then come back, close loop and start messing with 02 constants and stuff to get it to stay there? I did that with my MAF last year and had it running good, but never messed with going back to closed loop. This year I want to use SD and get it tuned and use the NB02. As an aside here, when the BLMs are 128 in places, the WB is still showing 13:1 or even 12.5:1 at times(part throttle)).
Or is it '6 one, half dozen of the other' to get it to 128 using NB then take the WB and adjust the constants?
It just seems I'm fighting air temps and other variables and I'm chasing my tail with the NB02.
Thanks for any insight. I've been tuning MAF for over 10 yrs, but I'd still class myself as an amateur. I had a good understanding of at least the basics there. On SD I'm relearning, but with anything else, I think the basics are there, but with the Super AUJP I'm using, so many tables are available, they make my head spin sometimes!
Thanks,

Others will disagree with this thought. I try to get out of open loop as quickly as I can so I can make use of all the tables available in closed loop. I dropped both the minimum time and temp required to leave open loop.
Dropping the O2 thresholds per a few of the threads around here did help my open loop richness.
This was a big help.

Re: Tuning Part throtte in Open Loop in 8d
Thanks for the feedback.
So you guys get to open loop as fast as possible to be able to use the most tables. Makes sense other than chasing my tail on the 02 constants.
Checked Super-AUJP and it already has the AIR disabled(min temp of 125 c). Was excited that maybe I'd found something there, but no dice. I think I need to lean all my thresholds out by 100 mV though to get it to try to get the WB AFR back on track at cruise to more reflect the proper AFR. Will try that next cruise.
As for curing the open loop richness, thats not what I'm worried about...more around closed loop richness according to the WB vs NB.
Also, you guys then tune VE in Closed loop as well?
Thanks..

Re: Tuning Part throtte in Open Loop in 8d
Just checked, all AIR is shut off in my chip. Also, looked and I'd already lowered the iDLE numbers by .100, but I didn't do much tuning there. I'm running open loop idle right now.
For Cruise modifications for the .100 offset, I think I need to modify these tables....
Loop Closed Param, FAST o2 R/L THRESHOLD vs MAP
Loop Closed Param, Slow o2 R/L vs MAP LOWER THRESHOLD
Are those the only 2 o2 thresholds to modify to control cruise 02s?

There are actually about three places in the O2 stuff to look at. You want a hi , low and mean value. Don't leave the mean value unattended and thereby risk having it outside the range of your hi/low values. Keep it in the middle , just like the name implies.
You might have idle O2 settings as a separate entry from the "running" entries.

Yep, in Tunerpro, Idle settings are separate from cruising settings. I have easily found fast/slow on cruising, but I haven't seen any high/low values or mean callouts. Need to look through them again. I know those exist for idle....but not cruise at least not that jumped at me last night.
