new to tpi guy looking for advice
Hey guys. I'm hoping to tap the knowledge of a few experts on here. I've been out of the 3rd gen game for a while and now I'm back. Picked up a solid 91 trans am (305 tpi, 5 speed, 3.08 posi rear). Has 180k and is very tired. So I've decided to build a 350 for it. First the info. I have an 80-85 2 bolt main block. Completely worked with domed pistons (.100). It has aluminum heads (190cc runners, 64cc chambers). Went with a comp cam (jegs# 249-12-404-4, duration 222i/226e @ .050, and 114lsa). Hardened pushrods in Stock length, and 1.6 ratio aluminum roller rockers. I have a 85 lower intake that i plan to port match to a set of slp runners i have. Also plan on porting the plenum to the runners and to the Arizona speed throttle body. Previous owner had larger injectors and adjustable fuel pressure regulator installed. Unsure what size the injectors actually are. So my questions are, do i need to swap my ecm for a 350 tpi? If so, 90-92 for speed density? And also how do i go about tuning? I know i would need top burn chips for it just not sure how to go about it, or if i should just pay someone to burn chips for it. If so, who would you recommend? Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.

In my opinion, you have too many changes to expect a stock tune from a factory chip to work. Regardless of what motor the chip ran, It doesn't run that combination any more. You've changed airflow dramatically, and plan on changing it more, Don't even know what injectors are in place, so you can't define parameters anyway at this point. You don't even know where you are or will be in terms of lean/rich or when it will occur as you are without a way to track it. It won't start or idle the same either.
Welcome to the world of tuning.
Buy an EBL system now before you drive yourself nuts and waste lots of money on chip services.

I agree with Dave...
www.DynamicEFI.com
Go with the same one I am running for Speed Density, the EBL-P4, it essentially converts your stock prom based ECM into a "flash" based system so no more chips to worry about. System comes with a self tuning VE Learn, and installs very easily. Start off with one of the many bins of your choosing specifically for your vehicle, you can then change injector size, engine displacement, ignition timing, anything you need in a matter of seconds. System is also boost friendly w/alky control, so no need to worry about that if you ever decide to go that route in the future...
