Black smoke?

I has tore up a rustang the other day and got a bit of black smoke out my exhaust at a certain rpm w/ a bit of detonation. It happened only once and was very short. But what would cause this, detonation, too rich?I pulled that chip and backed off my tune a bit. It's just one time I got beat bad by a new t/a.It had black smoke barreling out the exhaust. That seemed wierd for a new stock engine.Could it had been nitrous?

If you mean the new TA had some black smoke, that is part of the *new* cat converter protection strategy. They can be over heated quite easily so they toss some fuel in to cool it some.

Generaly black smoke is richness, it can be carbon deposits blowing out of the combustion chamber, thou. Too much fuel and not enough timing at cruise can quickly carbon up a chamber.

Nitrous is it's own animal, and anything can be said about it. Guys tune it a bit of every which way.

I feel sorry for a new ls1 owner then. When the engine start to burn a bit of oil the cats will clog even quicker.

??
Sounds like your assuming facts not in evidence.
Might read thru the archives at the DIY-EFI site for more info., on how exactly a converter works, and the most common failures.

Oil is another topic entirely.

EPA mandates 100K, testing, long term the newer strategy has to be better. They wouldn't have gotten near the HP they have if they hadn't really scienced out the new strategies.

Speacking of which I just installed a CNP set up on my car and its a neat system (CNP, coil near plug, ie one coil per cylinder)
