Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

Hello. 87 tpi with 165 ecm. Was checking to make sure my ecm was indeed a 165 to get correct definition stream. Removed memcal out of curiosity. Put back in. Now engine stalls after 2 or 3 seconds. I did attempt to datalog last night for the first time ever. For what it's worth. Please help with any ideas!

Re: Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

When I turn the ignition on the fans turn on almost as if I am entering aldl mode. I can't tell if I caused this problem by messing with the memcal or by data logging last night

At this point, recommend visual inspection of the memcal and socket looking for damage and/or bent pins. Then unplug the ECM, re connect it and try again.

Is this a factory memcal? No chip adapters or anything?

Everything looks in order. This is I believe an ADS superchip. No adapters.

I can get it to run but it idles very high. Keep in mind before last night's failed datalogging session, everything ran beautifully. I just wanted to datalog.

Are you saying my bin was erased from 30 or so seconds of exposure to the sun?

ESD - Electro Static Discharge. You might have fried the chip just by handling it.

Re: Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

If you have the factory chip, maybe put that in and see how it runs. If it runs good, then it's a problem with the ADS chip.

Re: Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

That is the typical symptoms of a PROM error. It's trying to run on the limp mode resistor network. Fan always on and hard starting/stalling is symptoms that the ECM wasn't able to read the chip.

Re: Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

Did you re-install the chip correctly, (did not rotate it 180 degrees) or bend a pin over?

Yes I was careful with it when I installed it and everything looks in order. I may have removed it incorrectly because I know I used a screwdriver so perhaps I did fry the chip

Did you remove it without turning off the ignition?

Re: Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

Even with an emulator you are going to want to burn a chip once you are done tuning (for the moment) the emulator is great but you won't want to have it installed all the time.

99% sure ignition was off... battery was not disconnected however.

could it be fried from datalogging with the 10k resistor last night?

I've heard of many cases where people leave it in no problem. But i do understand id need to keep all my bins saved in case the emulator clears.

but i agree once I'm done tuning ill get some eeproms and burn a semi-permanent chip.

thanks man

Re: Stalls after removing/re-inserting chip

chip burning supplies arrived today from Moates... will first burn a chip with a stock bin and see if the car runs.

I fried the memcal.

TunedPerformance sent me a replacement memcal and it runs great. No codes. Now time to tune
