i opened my hypertech calpack to attempt to solder a zif socket in and noticed it had no memcal just a 28 pin eprom, i had to modify the stock chip because of this, does anyone know why it doesnt have one.

I may be confused here with what you are trying to describe.
This is what I know about my Hypertech memcal:
My '87 TPI Hypertech memcal is the large plastic thing that plugs into my ECM unit. If I remove the plastic cover on the memcal unit, I see a 28 pin eprom. This eprom is not soldered into the memcal unit. Because the eprom is easily removed and replace with another eprom with soldering, I have been using the Hyperteck memcal unit with my modified eprom to test my car's performance.
There is no need for me to solder a zif socket into the Hypertech memcal unit. I am very carefull to line up all of the little prongs of the eprom and press it in place.
