FOR ALL wanting to build a cheap cable for ALDL

i have tried this and it really works for ALDL..this is the cheapest way to read ... definitely works till 90 camaros that have PIN E 160 baud..

i havent yet tried this on Pin M 8192 baud

depends on wat car u have kev...

i have a 89 ... i use a 10K to read the ALDL ... the software will read all the data and translate it into readings only if a 10K is there... otherwise if u leave it open it reads something but not significant portion of the data...

89 - my computer is a '302( i have both pin E and pin M)

the 91 and later that use 7730 dont have that pin E i guess atleat camaro_hunters 92 RS doesnt have pin E only has pin M which is 8192 baud .. there is a diff circuit and diff software for that .... tell me how the 10K works...

I tried it on the Grand National today, and it works great. I made a trick connector for the ALDL, have pictures, but do not know how to insert images in here.

Click on IMG, and it asks for a javascript prompt. What do I do from there.

You have to save the pic as a JPeg or GIF. Click browse(for attachment) find the PIC, click it and it will load automatically.

Worked awsome!!! However I`m pretty new to GM diagnostics, where can I find the meanings of the flags and anacronyms and good stuff like that.

you need a decoder. 89RS has one. I(or you) can email him and ask. I imagine others have it as well. A search may be advisable for a topic thread.

The pins I used are from the chassis to engine harness connectors (chassis side) that are behind the dash on the passenger side.

wow it worked.

To mount the pins, I first drilled holes in the case that were in the proper positions, slid the pins through, and plugged them into an ALDL I got from the junk yard to mock it up. Then poured 5 min epoxy all over the inside back of the pins to finish. It worked great. Only three of those pins actually do anything, but the others offer additional support and locate the pins in the proper socket in the ALDL. I would have used a smaller box, but already had that one.

I went for a ride in my buddies truck today, and I don't know what everything is supposed to look like when it is operating normally. Can someone look at this and see if it is messed up as I think it is........

hey kevin,
i saw that log it seems fine to me...lol when u data log using WinALDL it is better if u dont record the RAW values...cos it just takes space...

what i do is record the sensor data , flags and error codes and import the file into excel that way i can read it better , and also graph all the functions to time (which seems real cool at this point)

well kevin what do u mean when u say meaning of the flags ... do u mean like MAF = Mass Air Flow, and so on...

well our cars have a lot of sensors and so there are many of the values are here... one of the major uses of this is that it can detect the error codes that costly machines like AutoXray detect like for example all the error codes are shown which act just like the scanner....

and lol kevin do u own a GT40 ...if ya i wanna drive in that

LOL, no I don't have a GT40, but if I told you what I drive, you`all might not help me All of my friends are Chevy guys, but I enjoy working on cars not matter what they are.

Thanks for the advice about the dataloging, the flag question is that the rich flag is continually flashing, I`m not sure why. As well, why is the MAP only 27 kpa at idle, is the MAP ported vacuum? And what is the proper range for o2 sensor operation. If reference is .45, what is .1 and what is .8 in stoiechiometric ratio.

It's just as we were driving, some of the values didn't seem to jive.

Thanks for your time dude. :hail: Your the man

kevin ill help ppl irespective of what they drive ....

well i cant answer ur Question on MAP cos i have a MAF

and i know the 02 sensor runs like this

u can even connect a volt meter to the o2 sensor to read the Air fuel ratio ... the value from the o2 sensor ranges from 0.1v to 1V

my understainding is that when u cruise the meter will show 0.1v
and 1v when ur accelerating hard...so i guess 0.1v is lean and 1v is rich...all those fancy a/f gauges are basically voltmeters....with a sensitivity of .1v / led

on my car sometimes the rich flag pops on then suddenly goes off...

well when i was driving amnd loggin sometimes my park /Neutral flag kept flashing ... i donno if that was a bug too... sometimes my TCC lockup wouldnt enabel but i could hear the car lockup so i dont know if that software is 100% correct as its only 160 baud the sample rate is very slow thats why im switching to PIN M which is 8192 connector...which ill be building sometime this week..

and what do u drive anyway...lol ..I love the GT40 anyways

I was away for a little while.... anyways, my daily driver is a 87 Mercury Cougar 20th Anniversay, but my real car is an 88 Mustang GT. Yes, I`m Blue Oval loyal. After I get out of school, I`m thinking of getting a GT40 kit car/replicas. Not those cheezy ones based off a Fiero, but a real replica with the Monocouque construction.

BTW, I used to work a a GM dealership and will never forget taking a new Camaro SS for a "test drive" That car was AWSOME, and I`m not afraid to admit it. Think is was a '99
