will that even run Win9X? I just placed a bid on it at eBay.. looks like I might have a $30 paperweight. If it'll work that's great, I already made my cables for WinALDL, but I don't have a computer with a serial port to test it with. If that laptop doesn't pack the power, I guess I'll just use it to learn Linux or something.

I'm using a Compaq LTE Elite 486 DX4/75 that I got for $50.00 with three batteries. Only one holds a good charge but. . . There is a small (about 3mm) jack under the 120v cord connection where I can run it straight off my lighter in my truck.
Tunercat and my PP2 Windows software require 800x600 and I can get it in that mode but it's a pain. You have to scroll the screen up/down/left/right to see everything.
With Craig Moates program it works flawless. I even have a $39 PCI network card to transfer the data to my desktop computer.
About all I use it for is collecting data, then I edit it on the desktop.

I've had Win95 running on a few intel 386s(don't ask) and it worked, but it was real slow. Flash burning software tends to be pretty simple so I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I don't know anything about the winadl though. You might want to check out their website if they have one and check the min. PC requirements.

I use a 486/50 /w/ 8mb. Works through Win95, but real slow. That's about the minimum I think. 16mb would be fine I think ( I remember when it came out that level of memory made it workable).
Anyways, with DOS-based applications you'll be in good shape. Once you start adding Windows-based bells & whistles you're screwed into a Pentium pretty much.
For transfers, rather than using a PCMCIA-based LAN card (which I tried with limited success), the 'Direct-Cable Connection' of Win98/95 works great! Exactly what you need for transfers of bigger stuff. Right through the parallel port with a null cable. Prettyy quick actually, considering. Although, most of the .CSV type files from my software will PKZIP down to next-to-nothing and fit on a floppy pretty easy unless you're driving around for hours...
PP Fileprom will work great on the 486 machine. Although I've had better repeatability using the PP Win-based ware for Flash proms. Don't know why...
Hope this helps informationally speaking. Let's hear it for those paperweights! You can toss the battery, makes it a little lighter at least. Might not shave too much time off your passes, but take whatever you can get...

Get the most RAM add-on you can. I have 32MB total on one; it will run Win9x fine. Programs chips beautifully. Will even run Win2000...But what a hog that is...(I go with 98SE)...
I have the Compaq SmartStation, which is what my Pocket Programmer is hooked up to. I only use the laptop for logging and downloading OEM BINs with Moates Software; the SmartStation HDD has the PP software, the TunerCat, UltraEdit, Ability Office 2000, and other stuff like a Celcius to F converter. Printer can also connect, for the spreadsheets.
I have several of these laptops for spare parts. RAM and caddies are scarce, but I have other parts if you need something.
