New ver8.50 Craig Moates Software ready for testing...

Folks,

Please help with beta-testing. It should work out OK. Some minor tweaks, but this is pretty close to the finished deal I think:

http://ice.prohosting.com/moates/gmecm/index.html

Has some nice new graphing capabilities for live data and for stored files. Also displays/stores kPa and IAC data properly now.

Last call for additional suggestions. Please take a look...

Thanks,
- Craig

...Man...Craig must be broken-hearted...

...*No one* has anything to say about this new release...

...Maybe they haven't seen the announcement...

...Because it's buried in dozens of threads...

...Hmmm...How to fix that???...

No broken heart here. Only disappointed that people would rather waste their obviously oh-so-valuable energy flaming one another than doing something remotely productive. Oh-oh, am I doing the same implicitly right now? Better desist then...

The new mods are not too extensive, and I'm sure I forgot something. Just looking for a little feedback so I can wrap it up & wash my hands of it for a while.

Craig, now you KNOW I'm a fan of yours! I got the update loaded on the laptop today, but. . . I can't get it to link. I haven't had any problems with the 845 version so, it's either something I'm doing, or something is broken in the program. I did find that it isn't compiled. I use the startrun.bat to start the program.

I'll look into it more tomorrow. I did notice the kPa and IAC additions and hit the P key for some plotting but like I said, without it linking all I got was some really weird numbers.

I'll get back to you ASAP!

Just so you know, I will help out with this, but my GTA is in storage and is not at my current location so I really don't know when I will be able to peruse the new bells and whistles .

As a contributor to your Donation Fund, I do care...

However, I have the same problem as Matt...stuck in MN with snow and salt as far as the eye can see

Give me a few months and I will be happy to use your software daily for tuning....

Thanks in advance for continuing to improve the software for us poor guys out here...

Nice product Craig

EPROM Adapter: ZIF-to-ECM adapter came in today but USPS added a little damage to it, I manage to straighten out the bent prongs but all seem to be fine.

The end product is excellent, the quaility is second to none, your
a GREAT asset to the hobbie Craig keep up the GREAT work

In addition, I'm going to be testing your software as soon as my new cable arrives.

Hey Craig I'am having the same problems SMasterson is having. 845 version works good for me but I can't seem to get 850 to link, all I'am getting is random numbers everywere. Any ideas what I'am doing wrong here?

Please go into the defaults menu (8) and set things up for the 'Diagnostic Mode' instead of 'Offline Mode', and then select your proper ECM. Might have better luck.

Apologies if you've already tried this. If you have and it still isn't working, then I have more work to do apparently.

I'll be trying it out this weekend (been too busy this week). Speaking of the wonderful Moates software, I still can't get it to give me data any faster than approx. once ever .6 second, even though I'm requesting it for ever .1 second. I think it's due to the really slow lap-top I'm borrowing from a friend (don't know speed, but I think it's a 386 or 486). Has anyone run into this problem before? This makes WOT tuning very difficult since I end up missing a lot of data...

Yes, I think that the laptop I sold to the other Greg had a problem with slow updates; he bought a new laptop and is working OK now.

Do you have any more to sell? Does anyone know where would be a good place to look (websites in particular) for a used laptop that isn't too slow?

Is it me or the software? Can't seem to find the graphing stuff. Let us know. As usual you have done a great job with the latest release.

To get to the graphing stuff, first you should link up and get to one of the pages for data display (1 through 4). Then you'll see at the top of the screen the 'P' option for plotting data. Press 'P' like you would 'L' to log data, and it should carry you to the plotting screen. It's not 100% robust yet, so expect to get dumped to the command prompt if you key something wrong.

I'll be out for the next week, so talk amongst yourselves and I'll check in when I get back.

Today tried your new program Craig and it connected right away.
I really like the plotting screen as you can better see each value.

I also recorded my first run with the Log option. I will try to analyze it closer maybe with somebody's help.

Great program Craig, you are an awesome guy.

Thanks.

I just downloaded the software and I ran it with nothing connected to my serial port and all the values were changing really fast like engine rpm. Now why is it showing values for every screen if my car is not hooked up to my computer?

As Craig mentioned in a previous reply in this thread, the program defaults to Offline Mode, which is what shows the funky numbers you're seeing. You need to change it to Diagnostic Mode in the defaults menu (no. 8 from the main screen).

Anyone know *why* Craig set the default to Offline mode???

I assume he set it up this way because that's the way he wants it...but, what does he use it for that he prefers Offline mode???

(This is about the 4th time I've gotten bitten by this...D'Oh!!!)...

You can change the default mode from offline to online. The source code is provided with the program.

Craig,

I'm ready to get on board with you and I'm willing to try your lastest upgrade as a beta tester. I have not tried your software yet, but would like to very much. AutoXray is so limited.

How do I get your software?

If I go the the link in the very first post of yours in this thread, should I simple download the lastest version?

You download version 8.5 from his site, but you also need a cable to hook into the pc.

Why in offline mode? Ahh, it is because I have deemed it so. Question not the motives!

Good lord, reading a bit much into it, eh? Because that's where it was when I got through with beta testing and it was 3am, that's all. Zipped & FTP. You've got the raw deal.

When I get good feedback and get a chance to digest it state-side this coming weekend, I'll issue a revision which is not in offline mode. Maybe have it default for 165 ECM? Anyways, it should save your defaults once you change them, so you'll be in good shape that way.

Have fun, I know I have! First vacation ever, aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas, 7 days in the Caribbean. Cool/warm/whatever, it's all a blur almost, but almost over. Dreading the return a bit, wish we could stay out here for a longer bit. Did you know these monsters have over 60,000 HP? Can you imagine the torque curve on one of these mothers?!?

Yep, gloat-gloat. Back home now, work on Monday.

Any critical feedback on the program? Suggestions on the graphing functions?

Guess I should have some sort of alert displayed letting people know they need to be in online mode. Maybe some stuff like that...

Your software doesn't work with the 6870 (85) ecm does it? The 7165 stuff I'm doing isn't together yet (motor on stand, harness out of car). I will be happy to use it when I get something to use it on going. I'm new to this board, and tpi computer stuff in general. The only software I've used of this type is Freescan and WinAlDL (freescan for my 4th gen and Win ALDL for the 85). How does your software differ if you don't mind me asking? Thanks

I worked on a similar engine once; the amazing part was it made the torque/horsepower at 300RPM (that's three hundred RPM redline)...

Apologies if you've already tried this. If you have and it still isn't working, then I have more work to do apparently.
Craig, it works fine in 'diagnostic' mode. I feel like real dummy. I didn't have any problem figuring that out with the other version but I'm so used to it working so well I forget to set all the parameters.

If I made a list of the things I'd like to see in the program I'm afraid it would come across as being ungrateful to you. I have a couple of ideas, but nothing that improves the functionality of it.

Thanks for a super program!

Oh, and I love the PROM adapter! I actually like switching the PROM chip MUCH better than switching the whole MEMCAL each time. I just pack my newly burned one on a piece of static foam and switch it out, put the old one in my pocket, and reprogram it again later.

(off topic but just though of it) - Don't reboot your computer with a 29C256 PROM in a PP2! I suppose when the computer initializes the port the chip gets erased. (Mine does anyway)

All FF's when I MOVED it to the buffer and looked at it! I was wanting to copy one last week that I brought into the house, (desktop) but got tied up and left it sit in the PP2. I couldn't remember if I'd programmed it from the laptop or desktop so I figured I'd just copy it and start from there. I was a pretty decent chip as far as BLM's go. Couple of days later went to read it and it was blank. Thought maybe I got it screwed up with another so I tried veryfying the few sitting on my bench. Now I use a foolproof numbering system with stickers on the PROMs.

Last night, just for kicks, I rebooted with one in there and sure enough, all FF's when I was finished. BTW, the directions with the PP2 *DO* say to only put the PROM in after the software is started and remove it before you close it. Now I know why!

Yeah, I accidentally left a 29C256 in the PP when exiting the program. Went to play with it later, and "Oh Crap!" here's the chip in there. It had gotten VERY hot, just about smelled the skin from my finger when I pulled it out. Believe it or not, the chip was OK!

Moral of the story: Allow chip to be in programmer ONLY when proper chip selection has been made within the program!

Anyways, back to topic. My skin isn't thin, so please give any suggestion or advice regarding the feature array without fear of insult. This may be one of the last mods to the program, so I want to make sure it captures the bulk of desirables.

Thanks

Damn! For a moment, I was hoping that ECM 8.53 was finally here, and the thread title was just a typo!

Ah well....

Haha, I have been waiting for 8.53, but being dated 4/17/2003 I guess I'm a lil late. Not a big fan of running it through qb, tried to make it executable but I couldn't figure it out. Waiting for 8.54.

I'm not sure what craigs doing with the software. 8.52 is the latest linked on his site.

I had no prob modifying the code to 8.53 to have more than 2 ecms. The issue is talking to aldl

1) I don't understand craigs ecm dat file format
2) I was looking at how the code interacts witht he ECM. Basicly if its a 165, send this string, if its a 730 send that string. I don't know enough about ALDL to know what to do to establish a 749 connection.

I guess its time to ask for help now. Craig??
