Bad ecm or prom attn Calgarians

Ok boys i dont know where to post this so i'm going to place it in a few spots... Moderators, please delete this if it doesnt fit on the board.

My car diesd the other day, COULDNT boost it just sat there and clicked, thought it was the starter or the solenoid, sent it in for a checkup...
this is what they found.

My fuel injectors arent pulsing ?!?!?!?!!
They say it's the ECM.. I've never even heard of a bad ECM. I thought it might be the PROM but not an ECM, perhaps some moisture got into the ECM and ruined it over the winter? any help is appreciated here Thanos

Be careful, many mechanic shops say that the ECM needs to be replaced which in fact it is not the culprit. Why would they say that? I am sure they have their reasons.

- Have you checked if there is fuel pressure the the lines? Carefully press on the shreder valve and see if you get sprayed.

-Moisture in winter? I doubt it. The ECM is well protected that is why it is placed inside the car under the dash.

-Can you trust the shop you went to?

If you lived where i live i could come and hook up my laptop.
If in fact you need an ECM you can pick one up the the auto wreckers, just write down the numbers.

This is what i can suggest. Probably other guys can tel you how to check if your ECM is fried.

Good luck.

I didnt have the time to choose, i needed to get my beast back on the road, i ended up paying 400 for a new ECM.

But the ecm got fried again, my ALARM turned out to be roasting the ECMS, we went trough 4 before we figured that out...

Thanks for your help

You do realize that you can buy most of the ECMs for our cars quite cheaply at a wrecking yard? The '165 used in the MAF 86-89 cars generally go for around C$75-95 and the SD 7730 used in 90-92 go for around C$95-125.

For the MAF computers, you ask for 88-89 4Cyl TBI S10 Truck ECMs (they are the same) and for SD you look for 90-92 3.1 Cavalier ECMs. It's amazing how expensive the ECM becomes when you say a "Firebird or Camaro".

I strongly suggest getting a used "spare" ECM so you can quickly "eliminate" problems in the future. Lot cheaper than C$400 for a "new" ECM. BTW, did they "reimburse" you the core charge for the old ECM? Amazingly, the "core charge" works out to be around the price wrecking yards charge for a "used" ECM (imagine that).

Also, who wired your alarm? If you paid someone to install it, you may want to discuss this with them. A properly wired alarm should NOT be frying ECMs. Sounds like someone might owe you $400.
