406 gurus....inside please.

I got my 406 back from the machine shop and am in the process of completing the top end right now. I was wondering what you fellas with 406's started out with as far as startup chips???? I've been burning chips for the 350....but nothing really to intensive. I'm not asking for someone to burn me a chip.....just maybe some pointers from someone who's already been there.

Here's the basics
Speed Density.
Dart IE heads @ 9.75:1 comp.
FMS 42# injectors.
Super Ram w/ Edelbrock base.
58MM TB.
Relocated Temp sensor.
Hooker 1 3/4 headers.
454SS dual exhaust w/ dual cats.

What made me pick 42#'s (Ford green tops)? The price.

I'm almost finished with the write-up. Still need to finish taking some pics and do some illustrations. All should be done by the end of this month.

I got mine at a swap meet last weekend in Louisville, KY. Iv'e seen them on ebay every once and a while for $275.00-$350.00. They are stock (low impedence) Ford injectors, off of a lightning.

Low impedance? you mean 2.4 to 4.2 ohm? I hope you aren't going to use them with a '730 or '165 ECM. What ECM are you using?
Are all late model Lighting and Cobra injectors low impedance?
Thanks,
J

My mistake.....these are not low impedance units. They are the high impedance ones. I gotta stop working on more than one project at a time My dads streetrod is in the garage and I been installing his new EFI motor(DFI based).

That's cool. I was wondering about the Lightning and Cobra injectors. Will they fit in a GM 86-82 TPI setup? Have you measured the impedance with an ohm meter?
Thanks,
J

Was the 350 you were "tweaking" SD? If so, then you already are familar with the "layout" and it shouldn't be too hard.

First, you will need to start by setting the Injector Consant and Cylinder Volume constant to roughly what you currently have (42# and 406 c.i). For 406, the Cylinder Volume will be 833 cc per cylinder.

Then you should see what your BLM/INT values are on the Low VE Table. Generally, this table doesn't require too much tweaking. It is the High VE Table (Extended) from 1,600 - 5,600 rpm that will require the most work. Read Tim (Traxion's) Post on "P730 - Part Throttle Tuning (No PE)", it will be very useful in adjusting the VE table, which is your primary concern right now.

Once you get the VE tables close, then it will be primarily tuning/tweaking issues like spark to get max power. You may have some IAC issues to deal with, but start with the VE tables. Your first concern is to get the engine to run reasonably well. After that, you can concentrate on "driveability and power" issues.

Glenn91L98GTA,

Yep it is a 7730 SD. I had it, the 350, running fairly well. To many other issues on that one. I've already set the Constant and Volume tables. Now I guess I need to wait untill the thing is ready to be started.

BTW I've propably got at least four copies of Tim's article laying around. one at each computer, the garage, and one in the truck

I have untill August 3rd to get it "right." I will be participating in the NATCs' Sport Truck Shootout. Right now, I am the only small block chevy registered, the rest are all big blocks. That's a lot of pressure to defend against the Lightnings and R/Ts'

Follow Tim's article then; VE tables are no problem. It's really easy if you have "dyno hills".
