How much is too much knock

I just got my scanner up and running and I have been playing with my buddies 91 camaro TBI. Its pig rich and all the sensors check out so were tracking down either a vacume leak to the fpr or the fpr itself. The real problem is the amount of knock that is showing up. He is getting knock while cruising on the highway right around 2200 rpm. Over a 15 minute periode he had between 12 and 18 counts of knock in some boxes. Is this normal or too much. The car is stock except for 3.42 gears and we added 4 degrees of timing at the distributor. Do you think thats too much? Thanks in advanced you guys seem to know it all.:hail:

The count is just the number of "knock incidences". You need to find out the amount of retard being taken out also. Also, was this while climbing a grade or just crusing on flat land?

If it occurred while you were in "high gear" up an 8% grade and you were just getting a "degree or two", this would not be unreasonable. A higher grade of octane may cure it.

Conversely, if this was on a flat stretch of road when you just gave a "tap" on the gas and it was pulling 8-10*, then something is wrong.

We need more info.

I am using winaldl so i don't think i can see how much timing is being taken out. Most of the knock was coming in around 40-70 kpa, which is where he cruises on flat ground. Whould another scan program give me the amount of timing the cpu is calling for?

Set the distributor back to orginal position. 6 degrees. Leave it there.
If you feel you need more timing it should be down in the prom.
