1983 Z-28 no temp guage reading

Hey everyone,, I just bought a 83 Z with a 350 a little over a week ago now and im now in the process of repairing/restoring a few things. my biggest concern is that the temp guage doesn't work. He showed me a sending unit coming out of the passengers side of the block which was broken off, he said this was the sending unit I would have to replace, is this right?? I went through the archives, but that just confused me even more as people were saying they were on the drivers side, in the intake, in the head etc...There is also no wire(s) hanging around that i can see, is this a one wire connector???

Welcome to the boards .

The gauge sensor is in the drivers side cyl head, there is a single green wire that runs from that sensor (or sender.. whichever makes you happier to call it) directly to the bulkhead connector (next to the brake booster). On LG4 cars, the ECM temp sensor is in the thermo housing & on the front of the intake manifold on TPI car (dunno about TBI but I'll assume the same as TPI). The sensor/switch in the pass side head is a fan switch (primary LG4 & TBI & 2ndary TPI)

AARRGGGHHH! well come to find out the heads that are on the motor are from the late 60's(the sender is on the pass. side head) so the guys at the auto parts geared me up with an adapter to make the sending unit fit right..I hooked up the only green wire that i could find that wasn't hooked up to anything but still no guage reading
