Gauge Cluster Swap
Gauge Cluster Swap
I have an 86 Camaro with the idiot lights, not gauges. I found a 1982 Z28 last night that is being parted out. It has the full gauge cluster and I'd like to buy it and put it in mine. I read the Tech article on doing and don't see any problem.
Question is simple, are there any differences between the 1982 clusted and the 1986 one such that I can't just swap them?

Along with the cluster swap you will also want the temp sensor for a car w/gauges and you will need the/an oil pressure sensor. The gauges will not work off the idiot light sensors.
Bought/installed the gauge cluster, bought/installed a temperature sender and an oil pressure sender, and all went well, sort of.
Cluster and the car were all essentially wired coresctly, except the donor car didn't have the brake warning light, installed the light in the cluster and it too works properly.
BUT, the gauges don't seem to read properly, volt gauge reads about 13 volts with engine off, 15 or more running, oil pressure reads 60 psi idling with a hot engine, temperature gauge reads about 130-140 driving. Fuel gauge seems to read lower than the old one, but hard to tell. Tach reads almost exactly the same as the Sunpro that I haven't removed as yet.
Something isn't right here, this is an engine with 100,000+ miles, that always seems to me to run hot.
Is there a voltage regulator somewhere in this system that controls voltage to the cluster, I see nothing in the wiring diagram.
Any ideas?
