how to properly wire tach
It'll probably differ from tach to tach on specific wires, but generally there's a tach input, which connects to the white wire coming off your coil. And obviously, there's a power and ground wire. Use a switched power source for the power, and a good ground for the ground. Don't ground it where there's anything else grounded or there's a chance it can pick up noise and cause erractic readings. Some tachs have a constant power lead for storing memory, and another lead for lighting up with your instruments. The former hooks to the battery or other 12v constant source, and the latter can splice into one of your dash lights (the shifter or HVAC wires are good choices depending on where you mount the tach).
As for mounting locations, there's the typical center of the dash, far left on the dash, steering column, under the center vents, or on the left side of the radio pod.
I have to ask why you need a shift light in an automatic, though? Not ******* you or anything, just curious as to your thinking.

So the light goes to the shifter light, the ground i'm grounding in the engine bay. My green wire, i splice into the coil. theres 4 wires 2 white and 2 red, i've heard i splice into the white which one the closer or further one from the dash?
