I swapped in a newer instrument cluster into my 1986 Firebird, which is mechanical speedo driven... I know there is a way to hook up this speedo using a VSS and some crteatvity...but the main idea I had didnt work.... HELP!!!!!!!!!

You will need to remove the speedo base & the optical VSS that is driven by the speedo cable from your old cluster. The VSS buffer needs to drive the ECM, as it did before & that same output can drive the new cluster speedo input. There is a 3 wire harness on the back of your old cluster that connects the optical sensor to the VSS buffer, and the VSS buffer connects to the cluster flex harness (+12 volts, ground, and VSS output to ECM & new cluster speedo input). The other option is to buy a '92 style VSS & the correct driven gear for your axle ratio & buy a cyberdine speedo converter box (lots of $).
