the button should release a solenoid and if you have the motor already installed, the motor should turn on pushing up the hatch-receiver. the struts should push the hatch up quickly out of the way of the rising hatch receiver.
when you push the hatch down into the receiver, a soft click should be heard and the receiver should pull the hatch down to the weatherstripping.
dont know if this quite answered your question, but the button you're talking about should be above your radio on the dash right???

Yes, that is where the button goes, but the reason i ask is because i just replaced the rear hatch supports and when I turn the key to open the hatch, the supports don't push open it. It just sits there for about a second or two until it gets pulled back down. I know that I will have to move quickly to open the hatch after pushing the button, but I need to know that the settup will work. I also wasn't sure of any difference in the 89 and the 90-92 models.

Funny I had the same problem w/my hatch!
Had to run out of the car to catch it before it got pulled back down! Weird thing is sometimes the hatch would stay up other times it would just fall.

hip-shot diagnosis here is that the struts are WEAK.
the motor releases as expected, but the struts don't have the ***** to push the hatch open, so, it re-engages and draws it back in.
you've either got the wrong struts, or your wing is TOO heavy.
