Welcome Aboard.
I'm almost positive that your Nylon Gears inside the motor are shot. I have had similar happen to me. Pull out the motor and inspect the gears inside, more than likely you need to replace these, or get a whole new rear hatch motor assembly.
Kinda sux when you are a newbie with a question, but almost everyone in this Forum will help you out. Let us know.

I think StngKlr is right. That sounds like the gear that hooks up to the pulldown motor. Go remove the plastic panel that goes over the hatch pulldown assembly, and remove the motor from the assembly. You should see a whitish gear that engages the motor. Take a real good look at it, and make sure it doesn't have any stripped teeth. If it does, its an easy fix. I think the gear is like $5 from GM.
If the circuit is bad then it also will not latch. I fixed that on mine by turning the little button thing (sorry I don't know what its actually called) on the lower right side (as you face it from the inside). Apparently it lets you close it manually, so you have to close it kinda hard too. I'm still very new too so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with your problem.
