Wired up fan switch, now fan pulls too much current

I wired up a switch to one of my fans, but now it seems to pull a lot of current. Every once in a while if I turn the fan on while I'm at a stoplight, the current draw will actually kill the engine. Is this because I have several feet of wire going to the switch? And if I use a shorter, fatter wire, will it solve the problem?

I bypassed the relay. I wired the switch from the 'hot in run' wire to the fan motor wire.

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Get some kind of relay in there or you risk melting (and shorting out) your wiring harness.

The "hot in run" wire to the fan relay cannot source the current that the fan motor requires - it is meant only to power the fan relay coil.
