Modified Air / fuel ratio gauges. w/in

Theres a few import guys modifying existing a/f gauges to read volts off the 02 sensor instead of showing a lean/rich condition. Check out www.gadgetseller.com/gauges

My question is, what is the advantage of knowing the voltage that your 02 sensor is putting out? Is there something I'm missing here? Should the 02 sensor be at a certain voltage...which would make constant analysis necessary?

Confused on this subject.

The O2 sensor voltage gives a gross indication of the mixture ratio of the average of one half the engine's cylinders (third gen F-body setup), and may be used as a reference to indicate the approximate mixture ratio, at WOT, however, the indication given is not very accurate for fine tuning. Passes down the strip or a chassis dyno should be used for accurately adjusting the mixture ratio for a specific setup. The real function of the O2 sensor is to serve as a stoichiometric ratio (14.7:1) crossing indicator for the ECM. The mixture ratio to output voltage curve is non linear, and varies from sensor to sensor, however, it will give an indication of crossing from rich to lean at about 500 mv, which is adequate for the computer to close the mixture ratio feedback loop.

So is the modified gauge good? Should I bother spending the $30 to get mine modified?
thanks tim

I'd say that the gauge is more or less an indicator that the computer is functioning in closed loop - it oscillates from rich to lean - and serves as a rough "rich" indicator @ WOT, so the mixture ratio scale should be adequate. If you want a voltage reading, you could connect a digital volt meter to the oxygen sensor output & ground, in parallel with the mixture ratio meter, as well.

Their design makes them highly accurate around stoich and highly inaccurate anywhere else. I think however there is such a thing as a wide band oxygen sensor that is more accurate than the standard o2 sensor.
