you can get to the speedo cable from behind the guage cluster or under the car...it will only pull out from the guage cluster end, I think (I just had a serious brain fart and can't recall for sure).
To get the guage cluster out...take off the screws that hold the bezel plate on...then their are 2 small nuts at the bottom of the cluster inside where all the lights are like 7mm, once those are out you'll have to pull the cluster forward...not easy unless you have tilt steering, and then wiggle your hand up in there until you feel the clip at the back of the speedo...just squeeze the tab on the clip and pull it should come loose. Then smoothly pull the speedo cable out, its pretty long, and has to go thru some twists and turns, so if it gets stuck just use steady pressure dont yank on it. Once its out, use some white lithium grease on it, just a little...as you feed it back in, turning it as you feed it is a good idea, spread the grease around, add a dab of grease every several inches. Now reverse process to put the gauges back in...make sure you plug the cable back into the speedo and it clicks the connector. If you are unsure about this, get a shop manual (Haynes, CLymers, Chiltons..et al) and look at the pictures
sorry bout the novel

No problem, I just had a thought...a graphite based lubricant would probably work as well. You want to use something that isn't going to evaporate or break down.
