accel DFI

I have a 1987 trans am GTA that is heavily modified. I just put a 383 in it. It has a paxton blower on it which I removed and a D1-SC will take over. I have it decently tuned but I know there is a lot more potential. I think that DFI may be the best way to go. I have heard that a new better version has come out. I am familiar with what I can do with the setup but not how it installs. Do i have to re-wire the car, or does it just plug in? I run a MAF system will this need to be changed to speed density? If so, does it come with the required parts to convert? I have looked through the accel catalog and I must be missing something because i don't see a part number for what I am looking for. If anyone has the part number it would be greatly appreciated. I am going to try and call accel during the week. Is there anything else that I will need once I get the setup? Is it easy to tune or do I need to take it somewhere? My tuning ability is average.
Thanks!
-Matt

Matt,

It sounds like you're taking the same path I've taken -- Paxton to ATI.

I noticed how you're in California. I just found out that the Accel DFI has NO emissions provisions. It is a stand alone system that completely eliminates your present engine wiring including emissions, be it MAF or SD. This has completely ruled out the DFI in my opinion; I have a yearly visual and tailpipe emissions check here in Arizona.

Because my MAF maxes out, it registers 255 g/s at only 3,000 rpm, I feel a lot of potential is lost above this point. So I'm seriously considering converting to SD (730 ECM) and Carroll's Superfueler system (a supplemental electronic fuel injection system that operates in boost only).

In the process of talking to Glenn91GTA (moderator of the EPROM board), he mentioned going to the 749 ECM. This ECM is used on GMC Syclones and Typhoons (these trucks have factory turbos). The difference between this ECM and Turbo T/A's is the fact that it is speed density and uses a 2-bar MAP sensor (reads boost!!). We do not know of anyone who has tried this conversion yet and are currently researching the viability of using the 749 and it looks very promising. Using the 749 would eliminate the need for the Superfueler.

If you do decide to go with the DFI, take a look at this website http://www.whiteracing.com

They sell a complete set up for a reasonable price. They build a jumper board to go from your existing wiring harness to the Accel/DFI ecu. They also have the speed density conversion kit (which you do have to do for the DFI).

I bought a complete package from them which included the Accel ecu, Calmap, the jumper board and speed density conversion kit for a very good price. It has also worked flawlessly for a few years now.
