Innacurate Fuel Tank Readings
Innacurate Fuel Tank Readings
I'm experiencing problems with my fuel guage in my '88 GTA. It has a digital dash. The guage will not show true fuel level. If I fill it up, only one-quarter registers on the guage. I've gone so far as to remove the tank and check the sending unit, it works fine as it shows the correct resistance (90 ohms full, 0 ohms empty), Also, checked all my grounds etc... I've got so frustrated, I decided to add an auto meter fuel guage, I used the exact same factory wires from the sending unit, now it reads properly. However, I don't like the "aftermarket look" and I want my guage to work again. Any suggestions? The ECM was removed from the car when I bought it (I'm running a carb for now), would this have any effect on my factory guage?

It's probably the gauge, itself. Pull the cluster & apply power & ground to the gauges circuit. The gauge should read full scale with the gauge input open & should read low scale when the gauge input is grounded. I'm not sure if GM sells the individual gauges for a cluster - probably not - but you should be able to pick up a used cluster from a junk yard for $75 to $150 & swap the gauges.
