Help with "Painless" wiring harness
Hey guys, not sure where to post this, so we'll try here. I have an 87 T/A 4bbl and am swapping in a TPI from an 86 IROC. I have everything, my only problem is this wiring harness. It's about a mile too short, when routed thru the facoty hole in the fender well. Is there a better way to run this thing or can I mount the computer somewhere else? Also, the instruction book for this harness says to swap from MAF to Speed Density, I need the S/D computer, a new knock sensor, a MAP sensor, and to eliminate the electronic spark control module. This sounds too easy, what about wiring?? Any help or info or pics you guys could provide would be a huge help, thanks all.

Hey, I have been there, done that, and thats why I don't reccomned the Painless Wiring to anybody. I have the 60103 harness installed on my car, so you probably have the same problem I did. The harness is NOT meant for factory applications. They are meant for custom applications where the harness can go through the firewall right next to the motor. since you ran it through the factory passthrough behind the passenger side fender like I did, its about 2.5 feet to short.
I didn't realize this untill I had already wired the "interior" half into my dash, so it was to late. I had to cut the whole damned harness in half, and resolder each and every wire to the length I needed. This worked for me, working at a GM dealership, since I had several spare harness in a box, so I had plenty of wire all the correct color/striping. Although this doesn't do you any good. But there is an imaginary "point" in the harness that MUST be directly behind the distributer. This is where the left/right bank injector harnesses break out, the TPS/IAC/CTS wires break out, etc... and it MUST be behind the distributer, but right about now is probably in front of your blower motor. I don't think mounting the computer under the hood is a good idea, since it isn't water proof. It won't last long.
As for the MAP sensor, here is another way Painless screws you. They want you to mount the MAP sensor under the dash, so they only give you like 12" if wire from the ECM to the MAP sensor, but then you will need like 3 foot of vacuum line, and thats crappy. You want the shortese vacuum line you can from the MAP sensor to the vacuum source. I I also soldered in more wire so I could mount the MAP sensor on the firewall.
As for the ESC, The ESC module is internal to the 1227730 (The ECM you MUST use) therefore the only wire you need for that system is the wire from the knock sensor to the ECM. And yes, you WILL need the knock sensor they list in the book.
If you have ANY other questions, feel free to drop me a line, or stop in at the website in the sig, I did the EXACT same swap on my '87 T/A. Good luck.

hey slepeweasel, i dont know about the length of the wireing, but it is a mass air flow harness. i do not think you can use it for speed density. if the wires are too short you can try butt connecting extensions af color coded wire, but that would mean youd have to cut it
Dosent painless wiring have an extension set for TPI's. U know longer than the orginal harness that u got. If so how much is it. I have an 88' MAF.

Yes, Painless makes a short and extended version of the TPI MAF Harness. I know they're cheaper thru Jegs or Summit, but straight from Painless the short harness is $515.95, the extended one is $559.95. I got mine (short) for $200 used and just drilled a new hole in the firewall on the hump beside the transmission to run the harness thru. Works fine and looks almost factory. :-) Thanks for the help and reply guys.
