Any tips for disconnecting the starter ground wire?
I have the flywheel shield and starter bolts off, can't seem to reach the ground connection to the starter with a wrench and can't seem to wriggle the starter itself down between the flywheel and fuel lines either. Any tips? My dad's advice: Chevy's are a pita...

There are no ground connection wires going to the starter - just the positive battery (large) wire, along with 3 or 4 fusible links on the large lug, and the start (small) wire on the S terminal. You should be able to get a 1/4" drive ratchet & socket in there to remove the two nuts on the two electrical terminals.
