Need Help with Speedo (Failed Inspection)

Hey everybody,

I just recently bought an 86 T/A with a broken speedo. The seller assured me that it was only a snapped cable that would be easy to replace, and I believed him. However when I took off the whole dash the reverse side of the instrument board is green and looks like a circuit. From the look of it, the dash doesn't look mechanical but electronic instead

Does this sound like an electronic dash to you people? (although I do have the regular traditional pointer gauge-style indicators instead of the digital numbers on my instruments) The panel was only connected to the rest of the car with two jacks, and I don't see any cables coming out of the speedmeter itself. So my question is where the hell is the speedometer cable?

Is it possible to fix the speedo yourelf in the dash I described it, or would it be simpler to take it to the dealer?

Also if this repair is possible to do myself, where could I get a new speedo cable.

Thanks a lot people, I REALLY need help with this because my mechanic friend said that if the inspection people notice this, I would fail the inspection and would have to drive illegaly for another 2 weeks

You need to figure out if it's the speed sensor or the speed display unit that's the culprit before replacing anything.

Anybody???

Where do I start checking the speedo cable, where it hooks into the tranny? Is that on the car's undercarriage.

Come on ppl, I understand that all this mechanical stuff isn't the most popular topic but I could really use some help with this.

An 86TA is a electric speedometer. There is no cable.

Well is it electronic or mechanical speedo?
If its the mechanical speedo check the "cruise modual" under the air sorkel thats what usually goes bad.
Need some more info to be helpfull.

It sounds like its electronic. On the tailshaft of the trans there is a 2 prong plug. That connects to the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Check to make sure thats hooked up. If it is it could be the VSS or the actual speedo. I have a 120 MPH Speedo if you want to buy it.. let me know. I would also take the VSS out and check the gears. If they are stripped then you need to replace them. Good luck.

Thanks a lot guys, I thought it didn't look mechanic. I'll check the prong to the trans today. My next question is how do I get to it? (never worked on f-body before) Can I just take off the shifter plate and get throught there, or do I check from under the car? Thanks again for the help.
