High hatch-mounted third tail light install in spoiler-mounted light equipped car.

I had to get a replacement rear hatch for my '88 and I managed to pick up a '91 hatch in great shape for nothing. The hatch has the high mount 3rd tail light, and my '88 has the spoiler mount tail light. The harness I got with the hatch (from the dash to the light) has a 4 pin plug (ground, orange, white, and then a wire for the high tail light) and also supplies the lighted rearview mirror. I put a lighted rearview in the '88 but I believe it only has 3 pins in the plug (ground, orange, and white). I have all the wiring to run to the new light, but is it just a "plug it in" thing or do I have to change the harness under the dash too? My '91 is 3 states away so I can't get to it to check for myself. Also, will the spoiler mounted light still work when I switch the hatch? I'd like to run both. Thanks..

I probably can't help you out too much, but you may have a wire harness difference between the 2 cars. I have a '91, but have not been into the brake light wiring. I think some wire harness changes were made for the 89-92 cars, versus the 86-88 cars. I can look in my book tonight, but by then you'll probably have another answer to your question...

I checked last night and the "dash" plug as I call it has 4 wires, orange, white/orange stripe, gray, and yellow. The yellow wire is for the tail light, the gray for the lights in the rearview mirror, and orange and white/orange to the dome light. I will probably have to tap into a brake light wire somewhere and run it into the harness. I'm still waiting on a parts and illustration manual I ordered or I would have checked already. Thanks for the reply..Ed
