82 camaro, voltage light

since i don't have gauges in my car, i have to deal with the "idiot" lights. just today the voltage light started coming on when i hit my brakes. then it progressed into blinking on and off as i drove, now it is on constantly. no drain while my headlights are on and i don't have any trouble starting the car. also i checked my alternator connections and belt, all seem ok there. any ideas????????

Have you checked the alternator's voltage output? Should be around 14.4VDC. If it's lower, this will trigger the light even though the car will still run, but it's probably running off the battery. A couple of times i've seen the light come on while the alternator still puts out a full charge, this can be a diode inside the alt gone bad.

Sounds like the alternator on the way out, or possibly a loose belt. Bring it to autozone and they can hook up the inductive tester and find out how much current your alternator is generating.

ya know, i had thought about that. i've had alternator probs in the past on different cars and when those were running off the battery the headlights dimmed and all that good stuff. i'm not thinking that, sounds more like the diode or such. i guess i'm gonna have to visit the 24hr autozone close to my house for a check. thanx.
