Installing Autometer Fuel Gauge
Has anyone ever installed an autometer fuel gauge in their 3rd Gen? Will the 2 1/16" gauge fit in the hold in the gauge cluster on a 82-89 cluster? I am wanting to get one b/c my tank sending unit has died again and I do not want to replace it again. I was thinking of keeping it in the tank, cutting off the float arm and leaving the fuel pump on the unit since it works fine. The autometer sending unit look like it needs a 1 1/2" hole cut in the top of the tank and then secured to the tank. Autometer says the float arm is adjustable to help match the fuel levels to your tank shape. It seems like it would not be that hard, probably a whole weekend's worth of work. I have already dropped my tank once and re-installed it so I already know what a PIA it is. I was just curious to know if anyone else has installed one of these with the autometer sending unit? Any info. will be GREATLY appreciated.

I repaced all my gauges with autometer gauges. Unfortunately the autometer gauge won't fit in the stock gauge panel. You will have to move it to another place maybe under the dash or buy a gauge pod for it. I fabricated a new dash panel to hold all of the gauges in my car. I just used the factory fuel level sending unit so I don't know about the autometer sending unit.

Hey Jbenge,
I have seen your page before and your gauges look awesome. I like the black brushed aluminum panel you used. Im not really looking to replace all my gauges so I think I might try fabricating a pod to fit in the upper right hand corner of the gauge cluster area right next to my cig. lighter. I may try calling Autometer and ask them how difficult it is to get the sending unti set right. A new tank unit from GM is a whopping $500 and I bought a used one for $75 and it worked for about 5 months but just quit a few weeks ago. Basically im tired of dropping my tank to fix this. I will keep watching to see if anyone else replies.
