brake lights no workie

The problem is that the 20A fuse keeps blowing. Every time I put a new one in, it immediately blows. I know there is a short to ground somewhere. Instead of tracing the short, I just want to run a new wire back to the brake lights. There is one orange wire coming from the fuse block that goes up into the dash then back to the brake lights (I assume). Does anyone know where this wire is routed, so I can bypass it?
TIA!

I don't know physically where your orange wire is routed, but I can tell you what my 1991 GM service manual says it connects to.

From the 20 ampere fuse, it goes:

1. To the brake pedal switch.
2. To the hazard flasher (in the convenience center).
3. To the power input for the convenience center electronics.

Note that the brake pedal switch (#1) has two contacts (at least for my 91) that switches power, one wire (a light blue) goes to both rear brakes and the other contact is to switch power (via a yellow wire) to the 3rd brake light.

Replacing the wire from the switched side of the brake switch may not solve the problem of the stop/hazard fuse blowing since it also powers the convenience center electronics and hazard flasher.

Checking those two components (#2 and #3)would be as easy as simply unplugging them. Then the fuse will only be powering the two brake lights and center brake light, in addition to the wiring up to where you disconnected it to the convenience center.

Running another length of wire to the rear may be more work than locating the short.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Where is the conveinence center located? Maybe I'm just not sure what the service manual means by "convenience center".

Thx.

On my 1991 Camaro, and this is ONLY from memory, it is between the steering column and the center hub, up under the dash in the midst of all the wiring. I think it is toward the firewall, black and about 5 x 7 inches.

Look for a cylindrical can, which will be the emergency flasher. It plugs into the convenience center.

I was going to say turn on the emergency flashers and let your ears follow you to the clicking of the flasher until I remembered what your problem was!
